I still don’t get why people are still shouting “The comics aren’t canon! The comics aren’t canon!” at every chance they get. Since the beginning, the comics have been regarded as “potentially canon” unless contradicted by the show. It was stated several times to be the case.
So basically, take what you want from them and let people decide for themselves how well they fit into the story.
And so it begins pretty much.
Really hope the Royal Sisters don’t get sidelined/taken-out in this crossover here.
Same with hoping Spike doesn’t get left out too.
Wonder if all of the pages of the first issue would be posted soon?

Nothing in the comics are canon to the show continuity until the Season 10 run. There was communication between IDW and DHX to prevent some story lines from creating confusing conflicts or redundancy, but that’s more to protect audience reception and wasn’t connected to the fact that the comic stories did not exist anywhere within the show continuity. Some ideas, such as Scootaloo’s aunts, were shared, but not meant to indicate a correlation. Indeed, in that example, the aunts’ designs ended up being very different.

The comics were not meant to be in the same continuity as the show, not at first. The second arc, Nightmarity, had Luna in her S1 design and still feeling doubt of ponies trusting her, even though the previous arc, Return of Chrysalis, established the comic starts after the season 2 finale. The comic is obviously set in a different continuity from the cartoon, though similar. As such, this could also be set in another separate continuity.
I’ve mixed feelings about this. I don’t mind them lampshading the fact that this crossover ignores the shows continuity. I just hope they don’t use this line as excuse for bad writing.
No I didn’t but it’s not a good example
Talk about EPICALLY missing the point.

Believe me, we’re already enjoying this crossover.

To be fair, you could’ve fooled me, given that hairdo and everything.
