I wonder this version of Kelpies is based off the Marids? From what I see in art and in my words: Water Genies.

It is disappointing. However, IDW is, admittedly, in a difficult spot. If they make non-pony species just like regular ponies, it comes across as boring and lazy. If they try something like new like the deer-as-elves, readers might be put off that way. Personally, however, I much prefer the second option and taking a few risks to write something more interesting.

I’m made of questions. Why aren’t they all black/white/grey? Why do they call them Cutie Marks..? I thought that was a Pony thing. No magic at all? Not even passive magic like Earth Ponies? Where do they live that they don’t know shit about Equestria or Unicorns? They’re not even on the official map now that I think about it.

Wait so this is what the zebra country looks like? It’s just kinda bland vaguely american? They couldn’t even make it like magic based Wakanda or something?
…
That is just straight up disappointing.

  1. I disagree they’re trying to have the kirin emulate a culture as opposed to referencing but will concede your point.

  2. The comics used written english because english speakers need to be able to understand it, even when the show used fictional text. I understand your complaint but this is such a common artistic license I’d need an example of how they could convey the meaning of foreign text that wouldn’t obstruct the work.

  3. Proof? We’ve never seen any lands beyond what’s adjacent to Equestria. And the books Zecora read were considered fiction even in Equestria until recently, that’s why they’re dismissive. The trade thing is a legit point, but handwaveable by assuming they never cared for each other beyond trade. The show ran on not mentioning characters, places or things until story relevant no matter if they logically should have come up sooner.

  1. The show not “ponnified” or “americanizing” non-pony cultures, the kirin is a good example in this, that is more cosmopolitan with European, American and Asian features. Much of the ponish culture is European.

  2. Everyone speaks English/ponish, but written language is something else - here the show has shown foreign and different written language for the ponies. The IDW comics have a problem that they most often do not show this. Andyprice could copy the Nko script for the schoolroom to show an African touch. Nko is very similar to ponish, and easily accessible on wikipedia.

  3. Equestria is no less dangerous than other countries with few exceptions such as Everfree and the Badlands as there are monsters scattered all over the world, including the zebra lands. Here it seems that Whitley wants to make Equestria a mythical country where there is not much knowledge about the lore there, and thus ignore two important contradictions; firstly, the books that Zecora read - secondly, the trade between Equestria and Casabronco; the pirates do not go to sea if there are not many ships to plunder.

  4. I feel IDW is not as concerned with world creation as the TV show had been, more aimed at a far more limited audience as English-speaking children in the interior of the United States. Then it meant that the whole idea of friendship expeditions to non-pony cultures and societies could be a boom shot if one is not as frivolous as Hasbro had been. I wonder what would have happened if Hasbro had allowed an expedition to the Zebra lands while the TV show was going on

  1. When has the show been better about not Americanizing cultures? Most have no real world equivalent save the Buffalo and Yaks and how are they deeper than stereotypes?
  2. Everyone speaks english whatever it’s dubbed in ponish in the show. Zecora’s native language was made up because Lauren Faust admitted they didn’t have time to come up with authentic Swahili.
  3. Even the inhabitants of Equestria didn’t know those mythical characters were real, even those alive during their time. The claim Equestria is more dangerous could also be misconception, especially given how frequently it’s been endangered in the relatively short amount of time covered by the show?

Your critiques are valid, but it’s an exaggeration to say the show was that much better about it.

The Zebras can use magic, but not in their own nature - instead, this lies in knowledge such as shamanism, which after all is central to African culture with the healers, too the witch doctors. In the TV series, Zecora has proven that she is an African shaman who specializes in the inyanga tradition by having herbal knowledge that was of great benefit to her in the Everfree. So it is thus not illogical that the zebras do not have magic, yet can use magic through the use of their knowledge in a continent where shamanism has strong roots.

But unfortunately I see that Andyprice has not stopped Americanizing the comic, as there is very little that is un-American in what is far shown by # 90, do we have to have English scriptures where there are African examples that can be used? And why is the local culture so heavily toned down in favor of a clone of American society? The writers behind the TV series do not make such mistakes when portraying non-pony communities.

And; it is obvious that the author Whitley has erred. First a possible suspicion of imitation of Season 1-3 through a zebra mane 6 and harmony tree. Then contradictions like when the teacher meant “They may just be a myth” - when there is a lot of evidence that contradicts this as with the books Zecora had flipped through. Then it was thought that Zecora should be inspired by Medley Brook - thus meant that there is no African shamanism, only that it comes from Equestria. This is illogical and self-centered.

Very annoyed to see that the zebras, which should be black and white, are as colorful as the ponies - which is not necessary, thus reducing Zecora’s uniqueness which was her strength as a character in the TV series. “Monster-covered land”? Africa is the most dangerous continent after Australia for humans. There are no fewer monsters in mythological Africa than in the rest of the world.

If it’s Season 10, it’s got off to a very bad start. You must not make the rest of the world too similar to your own home as with Equestria and Zecora’s homeland.

Huh, so Zecora’s homeland is SO far away, that Unicorns and Alicorns are myths and Equestria is considered a dark, monster-infested land? I mean it is monster-infested, but to be considered as something like Atlantis? Wow.

Racial discrimination, magical discrimination. It looks like it’s getting into the unpleasant things about the setting we’ve long speculated. Looking forward to see how it plays out.
