I believe he was referring that the Democrats won the popular vote by 3 million,due to the most populous states leaning blue. Of course in legal election terms that is irrelevant as the electoral college exist to ensure that elections don’t become a pure popularity contest and that areas that are less populous don’t get completely ignored by candidates who would otherwise only campaign in cities and the like and a handful of states would decide the election every time.
 
Trump won the most electoral votes,partially since he bothered to actually campaign outside hot spots while Hillary decided certain areas weren’t worth her time,just assuming the election was hers to win. So Trump got his electoral vote majority as per the rules of the election that was accepted,established and known and agreed to by all parties and candidates and thus won. That is how a representative republic (of which the USA is) is run.

I just wanna leave this here for people. I don’t post this with the intention to start a flamewar or tell anyone in particular how to live their lives and how to dictate others. My intention is to offer some advice and a viewpoint that may or may not be applicable to you, but that’s okay. This has just been weighing on my mind lately and reading the comments made me feel some may want to hear this.
 
I can fully understand and relate to not wanting to have anything to do with politics, trust me I’m sick of this as much as everyone else, but it’s important to have at least a passive knowledge of how government and law work, as well as at least some idea of what’s going on and how they can affect you in the present and future.
 
But at the same time, I don’t expect everyone to have a 100% intimate understanding of the intricate details of their own local laws, let alone national and international politics and offices, nor do I demand everyone have an interest in learning it. I also don’t just encourage people to vote on something they don’t have such an understanding it; if they don’t know who or what they are voting for, then while I can’t and won’t stop them (I don’t have the right to infringe on those rights), then I would rather they just not vote. To anyone voting or planning to vote, you do not have to vote for every single office on the ballot, you can skip over those you know nothing about and just vote for the offices or referendums you do and want to. You wouldn’t work on a house electrical system without knowledge and preparation so why go and vote for someone you won’t know anything about? I don’t know, your opinion may vary, but some people just don’t want to vote and that’s fine. Maybe that “invalidates their right to complain” or something, but just like you shouldn’t force someone not to vote, you shouldn’t force someone to do so if they can’t or won’t.
 
A few years ago (after the 2016 presidential results), it did inspire me to go and learn this stuff and did encourage me to be more politically active. Spoiler alert, it’s tiring and mentally draining. I became a bit of a pessimistic persona and my activism contributed to a breakdown that almost cost me a few friendships. Now, as an adult with a family and dreams, I have learned to balance things. I still pay attention to current events but I don’t let them drive my everyday life. Even if I am registered with one particular party, I am no longer the steadfast hardline I was a few years ago. In hindsight, it was ridiculous to go that hard into something I previously didn’t give a toss about.
 
The takeaway here is: you should be aware of what’s going on in the world but unless you have a career in law or politics, you should not let that be your entire life. Whatever happens, be it election or global pandemic, It’s good to take time out of your day to do this regardless of what you’re doing in your life and you can apply it to many situations really. If you go into an irrational problem with an irrational response, you’re going to get an irrational result. Above all else, if you are feeling overwhelmed by the day to day stress, all the nonsense of the world, all the depression of your life, for the sake of your sanity I would encourage you to take a step back, breathe and tell the world to go fuck itself. Having a calm level head can do your mind and body a surprising amount of good.

It’s really disappointing just how many people don’t bother to vote if they can’t vote for president. It’s equally disheartening how often congressmen get re-elected. Your state and local elections have far more impact on your daily life than which specific sociopath occupies the White House.

Before I begin: Yes, I voted. No, I’m not telling you who. US vote ballots are separated from the envelopes that identify the voter for a reason.
 
Vote or don’t vote. There’s no reason to, and no reason not to, it makes no difference, except that voting means people who go “if u didn’t vote u don’t get to talk” can go fuck themselves (the main reason I bothered.) It’s a show to trick Americans into thinking they actually have control over their country when they don’t - at least, not through the vote.
 
The problems in this country will not be fixed by participating in the rigged systems that create them. Votes do not dismantle megacorporations. Votes do not de-obfuscate carefully-worded legislation and political doublespeak. Votes do not background-check hypocritical social movements hiding their true nature under a dog whistle. Votes in fact are controlled through all of these vile machinations, alongside the broken and meandering nature of the election process itself and the “pay to win” nature of political campaigns, to make sure the only people with any realistic chance of winning are Saturday cartoon villains come to life. Like falling into a black hole, any direction you move - voting, not voting - takes you closer to oblivion than before.
 
The problem is not anything about voting being bad. Indeed, it does absolutely nothing, we’re damned either way, do it if you want, who cares. The problem is that America has been duped into thinking all we have to do is vote every now and again. We do nothing else helpful, and in fact go out of our way to make everything worse. We shit out a vote, endlessly boast about how powerful our sterile votes are and how they think they’ll save America, and sit on our asses wasting food, wasting energy, mindlessly patronizing the same mega-corporations that enabled all this spyware and funded all these shitty corrupt politicians and funded the misinformation campaigns and fraudulent “studies”, bitching about how 2018 has been so awful, here is a meme about bad vibes suddenly disappearing in 2019. Oh no! 2019 was awful too! Let’s hope 2020 is better. Oh shit, 2020 is the worst year in a century!
 
And while we’re at it, let’s make sure the constant astroturfing to turn the American public against one another by exploiting social justice and the backlash against it is completely effective by taking obvious bait at face value and embracing sexism, racism, and panphobia with open arms.
 
Each year will be worse than the last until we all get off our asses and fix it or we all die. Voting is lazy and ineffective. Donating mindlessly to the 2 billion charities and scammy “non-profits” (which aren’t non-profit) for every task is lazy and ineffective. We need to actually do something ourselves rather than trust a snake to do it and then complain every time we get bit.
 
We’re a bit limited in that regard right now, when going outside for any reason means you will probably die to one of the worst pandemics in human history, but c’est la vie. The pandemic itself wouldn’t have been anywhere near as bad (at least not here in the US) if we hadn’t complacently let our government get this inept.
 
I wouldn’t be surprised if these starry-eyed tourists from another world where the head of state hasn’t been replaced for 1000 years and fairy tale magic solves everything would, indeed, be easily fooled into helping pull this con on America by appealing to its egotistic “patriotism” because Celestia might never have seen this trick despite her long years of dealing with political shenanigans.
 
But hey, at least the dummies have masks on. They’re fools, but they’re not monsters.
