I’m trying to hold out judgment too but man. Between this, the alicorn supremacy narrative, the sudden political activism, and the massive time leap, it’s hard to hold onto some optimism.

Everybody in the comments has forgotten how ass backward ponies are in the show.
 
Appleoosa earth ponies just straight up took over buffalo land.
 
All of Ponyville was scared shitless of one zebra.
 
Casual racism against mules.
 
The Hayfield and McColt feud.
 
Major pony enclaves are geographically separate from each other and racial mixing in communities is rare. Ponyville is a noted exception. Canterlot is nothing but unicorns. Cloudsdale nothing but pegasi. Earth ponies in Manehatten and all over the countryside.
 
The tribes still have their own distinct cultures. Considering how overly emotional and volatile ponies are until a main character knocks some sense into them, division is inevitable and would likely happen over some stupid bullshit in the Balkans.

Excepted they’d been more or less integrated for more than a millennium by the started of FiM. That’s longer than most nations last. Intra-racial divisions to them should be like using leeches in medicine is to us. So no, it’s not really realistic. Extreme tribalism should have been completely eliminated from the cultural consciousness of the vast majority of Ponykind.
 
Racism against other species sounds a lot more realistic in the scenario, and it serves the same narrative purpose.

Nightmare Moon was a relatively small problem that resolved itself in a day, this is the complete and utter collapse of Equestria itself; and it’s due to something Twi and her friends have been working against for basically the entirety of G4. Unless she’s been put on ice forever ago somehow it makes her look ridiculously incompetent, the princess of friendship ultimately fails in her mission hard despite it being basically her life’s work.

Yeah, but one of the appealing things about Equestria has always been that it WASN’T realistic, that it was a setting where harmony and love and friendship were actual, tangible, existential forces with agency in the world… and, of course, alicorns are supposed to be immortal. When you enjoy a thing for its escapism value, a hearty dose of realism can be decidedly unwelcome. Especially when it largely contradicts previously established canon.

I actually like the idea myself. As nice as it would be to think that Twilight’s reign as Equestria’s leader somehow magically solved every societal problem until the end of time, the eventual reemergence of ancient divisions between the subsets of ponies after… whatever eventually happened to her… strikes me as a far more realistic outcome. Especially if the setting is thousands of years in the future. I mean, let’s not forget that the very first episode of FiM featured the return of Nightmare Moon after a thousand years, and ponies (aside from the one who had literally just been reading about her) didn’t remember her, or the fact that she had once been good and the co-ruler of their country. It’s just the way these things go. Memories fade, history becomes barely remembered stories, and the lessons get lost.

Apparently in the new show pegasi, unicorns, and earth ponies are back to being divided. So yeah, everything Twilight did seems to have amounted to less than nothing. I’m holding out judgement until we get context but from what we know I can’t say I’m fond of this narrative choice.

I’m guessing this is either a Twiggie reference, or something about the new show.
