Considering his comment is pure gaslighting, nothing I say would help him change his mind. People who are socially conservative don’t do it for practical reasons, but because they favor social hierarchies. The talk about “values”, “principles” or my favorite “economic anxiety” is nothing more than an excuse as a means to preserve the hierarchy.
 
You are never going to gain anything by negotiating with a narcissist or someone who believes a whole group of people to be sub-human or less deserving of rights. Rather than trying to win them over to your side, the best way to accomplish equality is by focusing on protecting vulnerable groups.
 
This is why fighting back against a bully works much better than trying to convince them of your humanity. The moment you accepted that the humanity of vulnerable people was up for debate you had already lost.
