Can only imagine Diamond Dogs or Abyssians seeing pet dogs and cats.

The G4 movie gave us several anthro “chimera” races that after my headcanon - which may be true - were created by the first magical civilizations in the dark history before the Great Frost. The Diamond dogs were until then almost alone in being anthropomorphic intelligent beings with arms and torso taken from the primate order. The ban on the human in the MLP G4 was partly circumvented in that way in that human body parts such as the torso and arms can be integrated with two-legged intelligent creatures. The minosaur was first out, then the centaur, then the diamond dogs, but it was the dogs that were much closer to the human than the others.

The Abyssinians were magical cats with shapeshift ability inspired by Japanese mythology, and the diamond dogs were possibly originally meant to be a distant enemy of the ponies. We know nothing about the centaurs and the minotaurs, but they were probably created in their time a very long time ago. Flexible arms with manipulative fingers interestingly do not have a source among the animal species, with few exceptions intelligent gorillas have been seen in the IDW comics. Then one has to look more closely at G1, but how much from the first generation has been transferred to G4, remains completely unknown. There you will find actual humans.

If the anthro “furry” people have been created several millennia early through the chimera process through the use of magic, we have a simple logical explanation of both actual animals and anthro people based on the same animals despite great distances within intelligence and body. Even if the parrot here is more intelligent than in our world, it is probably as intelligent as a child compared to the captain. Some of these peoples as Abyssinians may have “evolved” of their own free will, but the others were possibly created as experiments or as slaves intended for special functions with their manipulative abilities.

Among the magical peoples who have not undergone anthropomorphism, it is noted that these are often herbivores with significant social organization such as the yaks, the deers, the donkeys (these existed in G1), the zebras, the sheep / goats (we can call them “caprinae”, Grogar is a bit special like a ram with traits taken from goats) - and they are all “ungulates” by having hoofs. If there are primitive primates - and the Storm King with his people partly confirmed it - this can inspire magicians to create “workers” with much better grip than them, by having fingers. This may have been the reason behind the anthro peoples of Equus.

But there are pet dogs and cats in Equestria, and lots of chickens.
It’s an old question. Goes right back to: Why does Goofy talk and live in a house while Pluto can be owned by a giant rat.
