I didn’t have the habit of taking notes, and I still graduated. :P
I bought a laptop for college and then promptly realized that handwriting lecture notes is better than typing them.
I never required to bring a computer from elementary school to college. Having a laptop would be convenient during college but no teachers ever forced us to buy a computer for school. Computer stuff is simply done in computer labs.

Why does everyone think that? I’ve built my own PC, and helped my friends build there’s too, it’s freaking expensive. The only way I can see it being cheaper is buying crap parts from shady vendors that will inevitably fail and are probably the leading cause behind personal PC build horror stories.
