Why buy the so-called “inferior” Wii U over the “superior” PS4? Oh I don’t know, Mario maybe? Legend of Zelda perhaps? Star Fox? Metroid? F-Zero? Fire Emblem? Franchises that have endured and stayed relevant since the glory days of the Nintendo VS. Sega Wars? You won’t any of those on the PS4, sure there’s Sly Cooper and God of War but they aren’t quite as big as Mario.
You could make the argument that Nintendo is the video game equivilant of Disney, a company that many grew up with and can still enjoy to this day whether it be the newer games or the past classics. And thanks to such things as ports, backwards compatibility on recent consoles and especially the Virtual Console service they can still keep their favorite games from yesterday and even yesteryear long after their NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube or even Wii finally kick the bucket and more importantly share their very childhood with their own children to experience.
And really, for all the hundreds of games you could find on other consoles that are just as good as anything Nintendo can make, you know that when Nintendo nails it just right it’s going out the fucking park all the way out of the damn city! Their batting average with their hardware is one thing, their actual software on the other hand is a far different story.
And most of all, Nintendo is a video game company. Sony and Microsoft are not, not fully. If for some reason the PS4 or the next Xbox dies out they won’t even bat an eye because they still have their other products to live off of. Sony has their TVs, Stereos, Other Assorted Electronics, Television, even Movies. Microsoft has their PCs and Windows. Nintendo just has video games and because of that they made it their passion and it shows in their games for better or for worse. That’s why we buy the inferior Wiis and Wii Us, because we know that when that passion shines through we will be able to experience it for ourselves.
Oh and uh if Nintendo especially didn’t come around then that Video Game Crash that happened during the Atari days would have been permanent, and there wouldn’t even be a PS4 to begin with!
