I always imagined it was because tasting the rainbow took a lot out of her (more than just Larry and the gang) and she was back to normal once she returned home.
 
As for why she wasn’t in S1 at all? My headcanon is that she was (and to a lesser extent, still is) a psychological wreck after a thousand years in total isolation.

That might be the case, that the encounter with NMM forwarded her change in appearance. It’s my headcanon that Luna spent the entirety of Season 1 ‘overcoming her demons’ and reaching closure changed her shape.

Maybe she originally looked like S1 design, but after effects of being Nightmare Moon eventually caused her S2 forwards design?

Luna’s paleness confuses me. In this alternate world where Equestrian laws don’t exist and the sun and moon rise as normal, then that means Luna didn’t go Nightmare Moon and was never banished. So why does she look like Season 1 Woona?
