He’s a teenager at minimum and bringing dragon aging into it means pointing out that he actually age regressed himself back to that state after reaching maturity.
By dragon standards, the others dragons think he’s old enough to fend for himself. Take that as you will.
He’s not an adult, no way he is, he’s a teenager at best, and if you wanna get ‘dragon aging’ into it, he’s even younger. There’s a reason spike porn is tagged as foalcon.

Chronologically, Spike’s an adult dragon, so a dragon his age would look like even more of a gap than with Rarity. If you think that’s weird, blame the showrunners.

There’s been other ignored WoFs, but most of her dodgy ideas were shot down during the production process. This one wasn’t shot down because it never came up, and while no two writers seem to agree on his age, none of them treat him that young, either.
The idea of Spike being that young is thoroughly contradicted by his having a freaking day job. Having Spike be that young doesn’t work even with his youngest portrayals, and is dodgy even if you take him as years younger than the youngest age suggested for Twilight, which is about twelve.

Aside from the question of whether or not magic kindergarten is real, Twilight was taking a test to get into a school. Not the kind of thing that you would have a kindergarten aged child do.
Spike is actually treated as only slightly younger than the Manes by the Manes, and as an adult by seemingly everyone else. Given his social status, I assume that he’s either reached or been granted the status of legal adulthood.

Maybe it’s just me, but there seems to be wrse stuff for Sparity and anything related to Cadence with Chrysalis or Shining armor with Chrysalis.

R63 Spike is portrayed as a lot less brash, but her love for R63 Rarity is a lot more amusing.
I have a headcanon about their relationship and where it could go, but whatever. Personally, I’d rather them introduce a female dragon Spike’s age if they really don’t want him to like Rarity in that way anymore, it at least had better implications than Spikebelle.
