As others have said, they’ve always had value (one of the reasons Rarity semi-obsesses over them). I imagine one of the reasons they don’t get used for currency more often, is they’re the favorite snack of dragons. Having a lot of them in one place might attract a hungry dragon. Though that does mean Spike gets to help Rarity by counterbalancing her exceptional gem finding abilities.

They’ve always been valuable,and were seem beingused for ccurrency in season three. Rarity has a lot of them because she knows a spell to find them, but that’s never reduced their value any.
The CMCs were able to purchase a large industrial drier for a tiny gem. I wonder if they’re just what ponies use for multiple bits.
Or are they actually valuable now? I don’t bloody know.
