Also, even if you discount the fact that Fluttershy was scared before the Hearth’s Warming play, it’s a patriotic tradition and possibly, for practical purposes, a religious one. People on both sides of a religious activity will process it very differently from an entertainment performance, especially if, for instance, the script is one that’s traditional and basically memorized from childhood.

As others said she was frightened but also she was shy even when just her friends heard her “no other ponies around” singing.
 
Singing is something extra special to her so she has more of her security/self identiy wraped up in it then just being part of a play.

She got over her anxiety of not being able to contribute; she’s not really any better of a flyer, but at this point she doesn’t feel as bad about not being awesome.
 
That and RD is on her team, and RD is enough an attention horse to keep Flutters out of the spotlight.

After seeing “Hurricane Fluttershy”, I still wouldn’t have predicted she could fly in competitive sports. Nor do I have any problems accepting it personally, really; I can just understand why someone else might find it odd.

Under normal circumstances, there is no way on earth to get me to sing in front of a crowd. Christmas carols are an exception, as long as I’m singing with a group. I have no problems believing this.
 
“Rainbow Falls” is definitely harder to reconcile with Fluttershy’s anxiety and stage fright. Of course, one could always argue “Filli Vanilli” takes place before “Rainbow Falls”…
