It’s just the double standard about male characters interacting with the mane 6, or any female character really. It’s hard to portray a straight-up friendship.

What if Fluttershy doesn’t want to hang out with Spike because she has a crush on Big Mac and doesn’t want to embarrass herself in front of him.

You would think, but there’s been no friendship between him or the mane six. Earlier seasons were better at displaying this.

Yes, but his interactions with the mane 6 will always take priority on screen, no matter how trivial they are in comparison to the rest of his life. Maybe an episode this season will finally show him branching out.

This scene depressed me more than brought a smile:the interaction between the mane 6 and Spike has gotten sooo poor. One wonders if they’re really friends at all.

Spike likes plenty of traditionally “feminine” things. He wears an apron with a goddamn heart on it and goes to the spa. This just means he’s balanced.

For the longest time, I’ve wanted to see an episode about Spike and Shining Armor getting into buddy comedy shenanigans. Now, I want to see Spike and Big Mac in buddy comedy shenanigans.

But why would Fluttershy rather go on an unknown and possibly dangerous mission as opposed to staying safe hanging out with Spike and Big Mac at home.  
Fluttershy’s response kind of came across as “Eww. Guy stuff.”  
I don’t know, maybe it was more like “Eww. Sports stuff.” But she has never shown an aversion to sports in the past. So it’s puzzling.  
Anyway, at least they came up with a reason Spike is missing this time.

I’m conflicted.  
One on hand, Spike and Big Mac confirmed to interact.  
On the other hand, their interaction is used to portray the two male main characters as being obsessed with stereotypical guy stuff.  
Imagine if when the girls hung out, all they did was discuss makeovers.
