To be fair, the classic series did have a power scaling inconsistency. Sometimes they’d get their arse beat by guys like Fuzzy then later whip his arse inside-out.

Or in the one episode with the Squirrel where Mojo catches them all in flypaper. I get it was because they wanted to make the squirrel the big hero of the episode but, come on guys, at least have Mojo say “BTW, you can’t use your powers while trapped inside it”.

Pshhaw, that’s all the pony stuff he has? I can do better than that. I don’t even see a custom in there!

Someone needs to edit the episode with after effects so they’re terring open his pony merch.

Yeah, if the Internet were at its current saturation in 2001, it almost certainly would have been very popular. Most McCracken/Faust cartoons are very popular, regardless of demographic.

The Usenet posts that inspired Comic Book Guy also often contained whining about how the “new” seasons were terrible. This is in 1994/1995.

One thing that always bugged me about that episode:

How come the Powerpuff Girls, who possess superhuman strength, be unable to break free from TOY PACKAGING? I know that stuff can sometimes be a pain to open, but yeesh.

Final elaboration on my posts, without any interference from the autocorrect, I hope, since I already made myself look like an ass.

I was referring in-universe and in-episode more than in the real world. I was only ever aware that PPG had a few video games. I didn’t go out of my way to get any other PPG merchandise, if it exists, it was just one of the shows I watched in the nineties.

IIRC, PPG also had an online male following. It was less pronounced due in part to the lack of “New Media” at the time that could have made it viral.

For those unaware, The Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons was also inspired by whiney, obsessive posters to the Simpsons Usenet group. That was back in the early Nineties, mind you.

@Itsthinking:
They probably don’t have much of a social life eating up their cash, so it makes sense to me that they’d spend it on predominantly-useless merchandise.

@Itsthinking: The Powerpuff Girls? Because they were superheroes, though the merchandise in the episode did bring to mind that little back-and-forth between Bugs Bunny and Daddy Duck. Namely that the … beings whose likenesses graced various objects were getting seriously screwed out of money … or at least weren’t getting the proper royalties.
