No more so than Sunset. Their situations were virtually identical. PLEASE don’t tell me some silly nonsense about Luna being possessed, because the only thing that had taken her over was her own “dark power”.

Luna at least had the viable excuse of being medically out of her gorge at the time.

Considering they had several years of being influenced by Sunset before the stuff we saw, it’s not terribly shocking.

It’s not the “lackeys again” part that bothered me so much as the “eager, malicious lackeys totally unlike before” part. With Trixie, they were just two infatuated foals trying to see Trixie do something spectacular, and causing problems by sheer stupidity. With Sunset, they were a couple of jerks trying to bully Twilight. Yes, it was because a worse bully told them to, but pointedly not because she forced them to. They were fine with doing it. They were completely different (and IMO much worse) characters for no real reason.

Pathetic Failure
@Ferrotter
It felt more like multiple episodes shoehorned into a very cramped space. If any one of the plots had enough time to develop on their own, then they’d be great. But we get a single movie with too many ideas, and not enough time.

And yeah, Snips and Snails were portrayed as the lackeys again.

Pretty much this. The first movie was a competently done episode of the show. Not really “Twilight’s Kingdom” or “Royal Canterlot Wedding,” but also not “The Mysterious Mare Do Well” or “Spike at your Service.” And probably closer to the former two. It had some good gags, some good in-jokes, Twilight stayed Twilight, Flash was a far better character than anticipated. (Though I didn’t really like how Snips and Snails were portrayed.) But basically a pretty decent episode overall.

I personally don’t consider the movie to be on the same level as the show. Along with focusing on Twilight reintroducing herself to her friends, it had plenty of problems that were resolved minutes after they initially appeared without any lasting consequences.

Y’know, perhaps the few positive things done in the movie is underrated. However, they are diamonds in the rough.

This movie might’ve been nothing more than one big pilot episode for a spin-off series, I assume. Whether or not it is, I just don’t like it because it has many flaws and missed opportunities. If the sequel is better, then great. If not, then I hope they learn from their mistakes (which will not happen), and actually make a MLP movie featuring ponies the whole way through.

Most of the time, people irrationally hate on the setting (such as the school or the fact that it has humans), or misunderstand the film altogether by calling it a “high school drama”. They mislabel Sunset as some kind of “queen bee”, they accuse Flash of having no personality, and they underrate the many things the movie did well. Virtually all objections are blown out of proportion, and most have reasonable explanations.

At the end of the day, it’s just as good as the show, but most detractors will never come close to admitting it.

I think it all comes down to “epic fantasy” vs. “high school drama.” The series premiere is far from the best, but it got everyone’s attention because it was more ambitious than most merchandise-based cartoons. Equestria Girls wasn’t even awful, it was just average.

I wouldn’t call him supporting.

Unless trying to kill the heroes in the movie counts as supporting. Although I know what you mean. An extra Rider.

…Incidentally, is your username a reference to the Kamen Rider Psyga character, from… actually, I can’t remember which series he was from, but I know he was one of the secondary/supporting ones.

OP really should’ve edited that dancing Luna gif into this image. Lemme see if I can find it here…
