One of the reasons I found it hilarious is because the characters’ traits are exaggerated and a little OOC; it’s the subversion of the expected.
You’ve got to be able to laugh at the expense of others to enjoy it. Conversely, for Celestia to be forced to relive every one of her moments with tea would be unimaginably torturous, but I didn’t laugh at her suffering; I laughed at the irony of it all.
“AN ENTIRE EVENING!” Discord had yelled with hilarity, “Nothing but memories of her worst annoyance! PRICELESS! She had to put up with tea for CENTURIES! When she had finally confessed, you ponies did nothing but attack her, thinking she was an imposter!
After she exploded with rage, you ponies thought she was insane or had some illness! Then you accused me of the cause! Oh Oh Oh! But my favorite part was the memory spell. Every Single Sip! Every Single Gulp of EVERY CENTURY! Twilight, YOU caused her more pain in hours than I could have done in YEARS!!!”
And another:
“I mean, who doesn’t believe their mentor, teacher, and practical mother when they say something as simple as ‘I don’t like tea’? Who continues to think of any possible explanation that doesn’t involve the pony just sparing the other’s feelings? I’ll tell you who: someone who is too convinced that Celestia didn’t want to hurt anypony.”
It’s right about here that the author of Princess Celestia Hates Tea turned Twilight into less “Princess Celestia’s personal student” and more “Princess Celestia’s slavishly devoted yes-pony”.
let’s just agree to disagree. I don’t know if the comic is in anyway less faithful to the story, I’m not exactly interested in learning that the ending was exactly the same in tone and execution or that I was slightly off, but not by much.
A few final notes from me:
-Sympathy sometimes takes a back seat in satire.
-Make sure you guys read the fic and not just the comic.
-When judging something like this, try to avoid going to illogical extremes (baby-skinning, killing everyone, etc.).
Ok, I’m done. I hope I didn’t make anyone mad.
We’re just not on the same level here. Agree to disagree? :)
who says he’s in the minority? for your information about the Like/Dislike ratio, I didn’t dislike the story mostly because I didn’t hate it, I just didn’t find the ending any bit of funny.
I’ve had my share of crack fiction before, but this is going borderline fucked up dark comedy, at least imo, it should have known how to balance the tones so it didn’t make the story too tragic for its own good. Earlier bits worked to its advantage and we all had a good laugh over the zealousness of the Canterlot nobles and everyone else involved, but then you have some things told by Celestia that makes her plight sympathetic. I never experienced trouble with dark comedy, but I don’t think you’re supposed to factor in genuine sympathy for any of your characters if that’s the tone you’re going for, or if you’re going for that, you should at least balance out how much you’re making them suffer.. there isn’t such a thing as taking it too far at this point anymore, it would have been just as well killing everyone for all I cared at this point..
(The ‘you’ in this is gittonsxv.)
See? This guy gets it. The baby-skinned-alive thing is an extreme case, while this is not. It’s obvious after looking at the voting ratio on this image that you are in the minority. The reasons we can laugh at this scenario are: Princess Celestia and Twilight aren’t real, so no harm is done; This is a fan fic/comic that plays with and exaggerates the canon personality quirks of the characters in a satirical way; The author and artist have nothing against the characters or show; You get to sit back and chuckle to yourself and say, “Oh, Twilight, you would be like that, wouldn’t you?”
by that logic i am not allowed to say a video of baby being skinned alive is not funny because 1 person laughs at it.
…did you just compare a story that has a princess regulated to drinking something she doesn’t like to a baby being skinned alive and captured on video?
Some GIF maker on Tumblr makes animations of anime girls getting “Predator’d” by a sci-fi laser device of some sort. A user posted it on a Fall thread and I believe had trouble breathing while watching it because I was laughing so hard. The comment was deleted a few days later. :D
this and i agree.
by that logic i am not allowed to say a video of baby being skinned alive is not funny because 1 person laughs at it.
while that is a little over exaggerated it is what i am on about, this comic has no joke, the “joke” is that celly has forced herself for thousands of years to do something she hates and the 1 day she gives up and tells the truth she gets nearly killed, tortured all the while the country falls into shit, if you laugh at mental torture and pain then fine but that is not funny to most, even dark humor lovers.
and btw, i like dark humor.
Again, it’s DARK humor. There are different kinds, man! Maybe this isn’t your kind; that’s ok, but I hate it when people say that something just isn’t funny, as if their opinion is the only one that counts.
Honestly, I feel this is getting a bit overblown just because the story doesn’t have a happy ending. Not all stories end with a neat and tidy moral or everybody coming out joyful. And from FiMFiction, the story has a lot of praise. Of course, people are free to not like it. I just think it’s getting a bit out of hand. The ending wasn’t that sad.
Why, thank you.
Yes, stories like these are a big reason I really never got into pony fanfiction. All too often, the stories turn Equestria into a crapsack world filled with unfeeling morons for no real reason
(even if Putting your Hoof Down nearly did that in canon).I’m just glad this artist is done with this series so he/she can put his/her talent into something not based on a shoddy fanfic. Because if there’s anything I enjoyed out of this whole series, it’s the artwork done for it and the artist’s depiction of all the scenes.
(Slow,sarcastic clap)
Great job,Tia.No really.
Let me just say that I really…did not like this story.Again,I get that its meant to be a comedy. But the problem is that it feels so damn contrived and baffling stupid to be funny.I don’t feel humor in Tia’s suffering.I feel really bad for her.Her fucking people are putting her through all of this shit all because of a little white lie over fucking *tea!*Like I said,it feels so damn contrived that the fate of Equestria is over the fact that everyone but Fluttershy are being so unreasonable over a small little detail that really shouldn’t matter.
I feel InvaderSplooge said it pretty well in his comment.
@InvaderSplooge
WHEN WILL MY REFLECTION SHOW
WHO I AM INSIDE?~
I think you just offended all of England with that statement.
the comic does it so well, the gentle slapstick hilarity slowly creeping to wretching horror.
it actually made me like tea less
Just give her time.
this was mostly tragic though.
