Imho PH has much more S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro 2033 vibes than classic Fallout vibes. Story is gritty (magitech) SF survival horror. With ever growing Lovecraftian tones.

FoE and PH both stray quite a bit from Fallout’s theme. Fallout itself has always been a bit of a black comedy at heart. There’s always an element of absurdity in everything, from the campy communiques in the terminals, to the ridiculous post-apocalyptic Road Warrior-esque attire. It’s a parody; a send-up of eighties science fiction (and FO3 took us back to the fifties and sixties). So, in a sense, you could say that Fallout: Equestria is a parody of a parody, to begin with, which would make Project Horizons a parody thrice over.

Fallout: Equestria and its spinoffs are less comedy and more straight-up drama. Dare I say that they’re quite a bit darker than either of the franchises that they’re based on, and PH takes that up to eleven with the constant angsting and the horrible stuff that happens to the cast. As I’ve said before, it’s torture porn on the same level as Cube or Saw. Hey, some people go for that. That sense of schadenfreude at seeing people (or ponies) getting kicked while they’re down, and then having boiling oil splashed on their heads, and then having a heady mixture of urine and excrement rubbed into their burns, and… you get the picture.

That said, there are some funny parts in both, but they aren’t a part of the overall background. It’s more like the fics loudly announce “WE’RE GOING TO BE FUNNY NOW”, and suddenly, COMEDY. I guess that’s one of the disadvantages of doing a novel versus a game. In a video game with an open, non-linear environment, you choose when to take those hits; those cues to act or think a certain way. In a novel, it all plays out in a specific sequence whether you like it or not. You can’t limit yourself to “just the funny parts”, or “just the dramatic parts” without skipping chapters or reading it in anachronic order.

Also, FoE and its spinoffs (wait a minute, make that pretty much every fanfic ever) are in serious need of an editor/proofreader who actually knows what they’re doing. Someone who can edit not just for grammar and diction, but prose as well. They’re large enough to count as novels in their own right, and deserve that much.

Probably.

errrr, I got ninja’d. I meant first BGP

Second BGP i agree with also though, and I’m a guy that knows his wantonly madcap violence and grimdork, I main Imps and Orks, and I like to use mages and trolls in Shadowrun. Blackjack is simply too mentally deficient to be a main character. Rampage just seems to have a whole lot more potential, and Lacunae as well (I basically am hanging on right now for one reason and one reason only, waiting to see how Lacunae reacts to Trixie’s death. After that I am quitting this drek, chummer.)
Also it would be nice if they would find a smart pony somewhere who could state the bloody obvious, that Rampage contains pieces of everyone that ever used that particular rejuvenation talisman. That’d probably be the start to them functionally sharing the body and her expelling the Angel of Death. (though really I think BJ deserves that title more than anypone else now!)

Alot is an understatement of epic proportions. Srsly. It was just plain ridiculous and comical after the fifth or so fuckup, and by the bomb slave part it was completely implausible. I gotta agree with the BGP, if it really was focused more on the tech and less on the wankerangst it would be so much better for it. Maybe it should have been Rampage’s story instead…

Also that doesn’t really do Hoofington justice if it’s supposed to be so defensive. That appears easily assailable.

I’ll be honest when I say that I really didn’t like Project Horizons. It just seemed like a bunch of loosely connected violence for the sake of violence, and the characters were all more than a little emo. It seems like it tries to play more with shock value than a memorable story, and it just didn’t work for me.

@Background Pony
Project Horizons is more about how ever hero/heroine aint perfect and can do good, Blackjack trys but fucks up…alot, also its more focused on the bad guys wanting advanced Tech than just ‘TAKE OVER THE WORLD’ nonsense.

I take it you didn’t play any of Old World Blues, or stumble across very many Vaults when you played Fallout did you? Project Horizons is very much Fallout, it just focuses more on the creepy tech side of the wasteland.

Project Horizons is anything but Fallout.

So far from it its ridiculous.
