What YAB said. Dash is basically easymodo drama because all her biggest dreams are physically-based. Take her sight or take her flight, and she immediately feels unworthy of life.

Fans do that to Rainbow Dash because it’s very easy to create “instant drama” by having her suffer some sort of accident that permanently cripples her wings. Is it plausible? Yes, Rainbow can be reckless at times. Is it overdone? Also yes. Some people want to write heart-wrenching gut-punching drama/sadfics, but aren’t original enough to come up with much else other than “hey, let’s take a pony and destroy/deny the thing she loves most!”
 
Though this can be down well. I’ve heard excellent reviews for “Bittersweet”, a fic where Pinkie Pie dies due to diabetes complications.
