*Glares at Applejack* “Believe me, I checked!”
Beats spending the weekend with the Pain Monster.
…Taxing?
…
I’ll let myself out.
You keep using that word…
But you’re using it right so I’ll let it slide.
And yeah, if nothing else I don’t think anyone wants bodyguards who can’t afford to feed themselves. :P
It isn’t inconcievable that many would put their lives on the line for Celestia without pay.
What is inconcievable is that Celestia would allow them to not be paid.
What, putting the lives of your soldiers in danger is okay as long as you pay them? And it’s not like she’s sending them into the killing fields, they’re just her guardsmen. I don’t know any soldiers like that, but I don’t know any princesses either. You really think it’s inconceivable that someone would be willing to endanger or sacrifice their lives for free? I could name some examples…
Clearly my mutie cark is a golden trophy for slapping people’s hands with rulers.
Also, I’m pretty sure Celestia doesn’t really want to be treated like a god. More like a princess, hence the title of “Princess Celestia.”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but she’s also a kind, and fair ruler. so she really would not take advantage of a person’s worship of her for free soldiers. She comes across as the type who’d demand that they be paid as an extra incentive for the protection of herself and her subjects. Not only that, But how many soldiers do you know of that would throw their lives on the line for a princess without pay?
This has been golden trophy pone of ruler hands, giving logic since the beginning of equestria. - micdrop -
Gosh, MsHarshwhinny, why is your cutie mark not a woodern ruler with which to smack me on the hands? Seriously though, so the royal guards, are just…employees? I know if I was working for a sun deity, who basically keeps the apocalypse away every morning, I’d do it for free, food would be nice though.
@mathprofbrony
I’m just saying, there are people, or at least used to be, with such intense loyalty that the respect or appreciation of their master is enough for them. Have you read Dune? Do you think Paul’s fedaykin or his retainers demanded to paid or they would quit?
Why do you think we’ve never seen Applejack’s parents?
Going by that, It seems Ponyville either doesn’t pay much in taxation or the city is constantly on the verge of being broke since the episode Last Round Up, Mayor Mare was mighty keen on getting a chunk of that prize money AJ was projected to win.
Everything we’ve seen so far about Ponyville is community based so far. It’s community projects that seem to get things done, not government contracts or employees. I can’t say the rest of Equestria is like this but I would say that taxation is lax is Equestria considering the presence of magic can highly alleviate most burdens.
Or, more gently, as long as stuff costs money to buy, anyone will want wages to work.
I love my job, but I wouldn’t do it for free.
I doubt Equestria’s tax system is as complex as ours. Rarity’s probably just looking a little frazzled (don’t tell her I said that) because AJ left it all to the last minute.
Interestingly, I bet at least part of every pony’s taxes is not money, but some amount of corvée labor – a few work hours due to the government each year. For instance, Winter Wrap Up in Ponyville.
She’s also not omnipresent, so there’s a limit to the number of problems she could be there to solve even if she was intent on running the entire kingdom all by herself (not for long, just until she, you know, collapses from exhaustion).
“The royal guard seem to be personally loyal to their rulers so I doubt they need wages to work”
This is where you’re wrong and everyone just laughs at you.
All you said is reasonable, and I absolutely believe there is a need for taxes IRL, I just don’t see the need for an apparently extremely complex tax system in a magical realm like Equestria. If the only thing Celestia and Luna do is the movement of celestial bodies, what do they use the taxes for? The royal guard seem to be personally loyal to their rulers so I doubt they need wages to work, and ponies in general seem to be community-minded and would probably work together to make a road if it can’t be magicked up.
And yeah I know I’m treating a silly picture too seriously, I think it’s fun to do though.
Magic’s not omnipotent. There are only 24 hours in the day – at least unless she endangers the crops by keeping the Sun up – and she’s not all-knowing. (A spell for that probably has severe side effects.) Besides:
1.) A certain amount of maternal intervention helps somepony get settled on their own four hooves, while too much infantilizes them.
2.) Because we’ve seen that it’s possible for Celestia to be beaten, it’s vital for the good of Equestria that the rest of the pony race be strong and capable, and hence handle as much as they can on their own.
3.) This in turn leaves the alicorn resources for the major problems.
4.) Ponies almost certainly don’t want a few alicorns doing everything for them. Comments about Earth pony work ethic aside, most cutie marks aren’t for games or personality traits – they’re for productive jobs, from apple farming to gem hunting to, metaphorically, teaching.
5.) Ergo, taxes support a government which provides as much service as ponies need and/or want, as expressed through their various officials (which Mayor Mare seems to be, for instance).
Maybe she’s a Republican.
Doesn’t she, like, give motion to the freaking SUN? And can teleport people to the moon. Materializing roads should be a trifle. There’s got to be a spell for that.
@Ms. Harshwhinny
Wow, well that’s awful.
@qorl
Repo mares. :P
And why would a sun goddess (if Celestia is a goddess, which is ambiguous) have the ability to creat roads and water towers from thin air? Who do you think pays Fluttershy to look after the wildlife? Why wouldn’t they need to pay taxes?
I refuse to pay!
