Hmm. I would have said that hatred or selfishness would be dark magic, in this case – they’d be the opposites of friendship, whereas loneliness is just its absence. Moondancer, for instance, was lonely and secluded, but she hardly turned to dark magic.

I actually once toyed with the idea of a society of subterranean ponies that developed and extensively used shadow magic solely because light was a rare commodity down there. There wasn’t anything inherently evil or dangerous about it, it was just that they lived in a cave where there is darkness and shadows everywhere. They may as well make the most of it.

So what’s the difference between magic and dark magic? It’s the way the spells are being used, in a negative or positive way. Just think of Harry Potter basically. Chrysalis would have been using dark magic because she was using it in a negative way, and she doesn’t seem lonely to me

That said, the show’s always had that whole ‘loners are freaks!’ thing going on, and it doesnt need more of it. Dark magic dont need to be evil magic. Starswirl the bearded was apparently a loner too (though personally, the idea that friendship makes you better at magic makes me want to grow out a starswirl-length beard… and eat it, because i picture the poor bastard spending umpteen decades researching, when apparently what he needed could have been solved finding some random scrub in the park and striking up a conversation).

Is it out right stated that Friendship is Light magic, I was under the assumption that it was one of the best forms of magic.
