Monochrome is when an image consists of only **one colour/hue** (with varying luminosity, /sometimes saturation too).
 
you're thinking of greyscale, which is only black through grey to white
 
Black->Brown->white: Monochrome
 
Black->Grey->White: Greyscale + monochrome
