Nah, the actors had the time and means to use makeup for that. I think the reason is Doylist in nature, namely so we the viewer don’t mistake it for a real cutie mark or an animation error on their part.

It’s actually a picture taped onto the flank, like in fanart. Is there some kind of rule against just using makeup? Would it be too realistic and be seen as a form of identity theft? Certainly we’ve only seen ponies like Starlight Glimmer and Rough Diamond use it, so is there some kind of taboo at play?
