Is Nyx even considered a foal, though? I mean, in the context of the story she came from, she’s virtually a clone in the technical sense of the term.

Season 6 spoilers happened revealing that Shining and Love-butt’s daughter is an alicorn. Nyz was once the original alicorn foal, in terms of fanon perspective at least.
 
Not Flurry Heart’s existence somehow kills Nyx.

And Mary Sue llimitus tests never work anyways became whoever comes up with them basically fill them with character traits he or she has a beef with for some reason. They don’t hold much weight. Especially since “Mary Sue” nowadays has lost so much meaning, whoever uses that term is basically saying “I don’t like this character.”

Apparently, you’re not familiar with how reincarnation can be handled in the case of characters who are explicitly evil at first but then come back as something not so evil. Besides, how the Nightmare Force became good in that story is explained when Nyx confronts the pony who’s essentially that fic’s counterpart to Manfroy from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

I’ve been around since early season 1, and I hated “Past Sins” as much then as I do now.

What y’all youngins need to realize is that Past Sins was a product of its time. Nyx is from way back in the S1-S2 hiatus, when all we knew about Luna and Nightmare was from the premiere. A time when Equestria Daily was brand new, and FimFiction and Derpibooru didn’t exist.
 
I remember reading the Alan Wake crossover she first appeared in. I remember waiting again and again for Penstroke to post a new chapter.
 
Was it good? Hell, no. But it was one of the first epic (in the literary sense) fics of the time. Back then, The Conversion Bureau was seen as the most poorly thought-out fanfic and Past Sins was merely ‘decent’, certainly not the ‘oh my God, why did anyone think this was a good idea’ reputation it has today.
