Because he was the trigger for the transformation of others? He showed them that there is another way other than blindly following their queen, so now they follow him…  
It is up to him to show them there is more to life than subservience to the leader.

He became or likely will become King of the Pirates because he’s the one of all his kind who knows love and kindness best, and he knows it better than anyling because he was in fact born loving and kind. Fic territory might declare him a sort of “Chosen One” of the changelings, but I’d more like to imagine the “chosen one” trope can be used through genetic mutations like with Thorax or dramatic circumstance like with Superman and Goku, about as well as it can through random unseen forces of destiny like Neo or Anakin Skywalker. ^_^

Priorities
To this day, I find it strange that Thorax became the de facto king. Sure he transformed first, but what about him makes him leadership material? He was a huge coward before and will be when he leads.

I wanna see Celly chilling with Thorax talking about pony to bug pony politics next season, like she said she wanted to. That’d just be interesting to see, and give us an excuse for that Celestia episode that we desperately need, as well as checking in with Thorax.
