I believe it was said by Foust that nether Celestia or Luna are Gods, but given their feats of magic they are most certainly demi-goddesses, as you said if they where defeated it was by other powerful means, Discord is a sprit and is nattily more powerful then them both (if anyone calls ether Celestia, Luna or Discoed gods, stop it right now because they are clearly not) Chrysalis absorbed the love of Shining Armor to the point she surpassed her, those black vines were Discord propertied so is they have any abilities it most certainly be more power then anyone else’s and Tirek was stealing the magic of every pony in Equestria of course his power would surpass them in time, people say how useless Celestia is in the show but in the show she try’s and fails rather then just failing immediately like in this, the minie sires comic way back when caught her character perfectly, wise, benevolent, and noble, she’s not called to be a warrior but she’s no slouch when it comes to fighting back to protect her people, the reflection arc tried to make everyone she he was flaws and not perfect, we already knew that and was hoping on a good story to show it but they didn’t by making her completely out of character for the sake of plot conveyance witch is the worst thing you can do for a story and for a character, I will be patents but patience has it’s end and if the comics f*@% up even more it will be known

Exactly. Chrysalis’s power boost and the Plundervines had the explanations to why they’ve overwhelmed Celestia. But this here? Getting them stuck for no reason with the sisters giving the opposite reactions? That’s a lazy excuse to make a funny scene about them. Celestia and Luna deserve much better than this.

I think it was less that they were powerful and more that they were specifically designed to take down Celestia and Luna.
 
And they still had the element of surprise.

The biggest complaint I’ve noticed about this particular scene is that in the season 4 opener, the Plundervines were at least created by Discord, who was established as being much, MUCH more powerful than Celestia & Luna since they NEEDED the Elements to take him down originally. So there it was at least understandable that the Plundervines took them out, much like when Chrysalis took out Celestia when souped-up on Shining Armor’s love.
 
This bit from the comic has no such justification.

After Luna, Celestia, and Cadence gave Twilight their power, Twilight’s power grew to insurmountable heights, to the point where she couldn’t even do normal activities without spiraling out of control.
 
I think it’s fair to assume that each of the Alicorn princesses is a force to be reckoned with.

A bit late but I personally think Twilight puts Celestia’s and Lunas power to shame since shes after-all the fucking element of magic while the sisters just do jobs that 10 unicorns did before them. (journal of the two sisters says so and its canon)
 
So I’m not sure why people are somehow shocked about Celestia and Luna being overcome. They are not gods, just winged unicorns with long experience.
