@Background Pony #B377: Forgive me if the opposition didn’t even bother to back up their own viewpoint about Nyx being a “Mary Sue” without any reasonable explanations or legitimate evidence.

Don’t you get it? While I like the plot of a Nightmare Moon getting a fresh start, I don’t appreciate the fact that you won’t leave it alone when it’s plainly obvious that no matter what you say, he’s not changing his damned mind. It’s his own though, and should be left alone. One thought never harmed anybody but their emotions.
Background Pony #515B
@TheWhatNow:
“Nyx is a Mary Sue”: A poorly conceived and outright false notion likely born from not actually having read or paid attention to the story she originates from.

And it’s honestly quite disgusting how there are people that think they can say “well, it’s my opinion” during a discussion when trying to prove something logically. Especially in anticipation of getting their argument shot to pieces with the hopes that those four words will save them from being wrong when those same four words don’t do anything for their argument but make the person who says them look like an absolute fool when his or her argument does indeed get shot down. And especially when, like in RustlesLeafy’s argument, the point they try to argue is obviously not even true.

Just read the page found here if you don’t believe me.

@Background Pony #69C7
It does not.

“Guessing using science and logic” Hypothesis

“Guesses on discoveries that have been made, but not proven” Theory

“People’s thoughts based on their preferences and likes/dislikes” Opinion

“True information, or theories that have been proven correct” Facts

Facts and Opinions are two different things! There’s no such thing as “Factpinions”
Background Pony #515B
@TheWhatNow: You can if the opinion you’re trying to disprove is based on a fallacy. Which has happened more times than you think.
Background Pony #515B
@TheWhatNow: And are you even paying attention to what I’m saying? Opinions can only go so far without facts and proof to let it hold weight. There’s a certain point where an opinion stops being an opinion and starts being a factual or false statement. Especially if said opinion incorporates objective terms such as “best” or “worst.”
TheWhatNow

@Background Pony #69C7
Have you even paid attention? That’s not an opinion, that’s a theory… theories are guesswork, not opinions. Opinions are peoples thoughts on what they dislike or like. There is no right or wrong in opinions. Only positives and negatives!
Background Pony #515B
@Background Pony #B32C: Except how is it an “inaccurate” definition? The word “opinion” is just a fancy word for guesswork. Especially since, by definition, it’s a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter. There’s nothing that says an opinion can’t be tested to be true or false.
Background Pony #515B
@TheWhatNow: But what if your “opinion” is something like “someone can jump across the Grand Canyon and land safely on the other side”? At that point, saying that it’s your opinion won’t save you from being wrong. Because no one can jump across safely across the Grand Canyon unless if they were somehow a superhero. Some things can be analyzed empirically. And the question to whether Nyx is a “Mary Sue” or not is one such thing.
Background Pony #515B
@TheWhatNow: And my point is that even opinions can be wrong. The opinion of Nyx being a Mary Sue is one such opinion, and I can easily spell out why it’s wrong.
TheWhatNow

@Background Pony #69C7
“An opinion goes against a proven fact” What fact? There was no facts to begin with. Only opinions. A character is just that, a character!

THESE are facts of Nyx:

She was a failed resurrection attempt at restoring Nightmare Moon and was formed into a filly instead by Princess Celestia’s intervention.

She was found by Twilight Sparkle, who was conflicted by her feelings of compassion and anger to help this filly who looks like but does not act like the enemy who was made out to be. So, keeping her hidden for the time being, she keeps an eye on her.

THOSE are the facts of the character and the story.

THESE are opinions:

“Nyx isn’t Mary Sue!”

“Yes, she’s a Mary Sue, and a cliche.”

“No she isn’t, she’s a filly with a mother!”

THOSE are opinions. What the people think of the character are “opinions”. What the author made of the character are facts. It’s the reader’s thoughts that are, in the end, their opinions. Positive and negative. Opinions are not facts. They are only thoughts of the people.
Background Pony #515B
@TheWhatNow: You weren’t really reading anything incorrectly. After all, if an opinion goes against a proven fact, it is wrong. Rustle’s opinion about Nyx being a “Mary Sue” simply because she happened to fail an internet test that shouldn’t be taken seriously is one such opinion.
Background Pony #515B
@TheWhatNow: I could honestly care less of whether he hated her or not. Personally, too many of those exist as it stands. What I do care about, though, is him using the “Mary Sue” argument to justify his hatred. And I’m using the word “justify” loosely here too. Because it’s behavior like his that virtually caused the term “Mary Sue” to mean “a character that you simply don’t like.”

I didn’t want to get involved, but…

First of all, anon, people are free to express what they like and hate. That’s what makes freedom of speech so bittersweet as it is, it’s just how the internet goes.

Rustles, saying Nyx is a Mary Sue is debatable, but hating Nyx is your opinion. There will be people who have different opinions, that’s a fact. Personally, I like Nyx. Sure, she needs more work than what Pen Stroke did with her story, but I still think she’s a good OC, regardless of the major flaws in the story. Either way, I think this is heading to nowhere with the childish bickering.
Background Pony #515B
@Background Pony #69C7:
You do know there are hundreds who agree with me
Oh really? Where are they? Because I doubt anyone that actually believes that Nyx is a Mary Sue will be able to support that notion with objective evidence. Because how are you gonna provide objective evidence that a character’s an example of a term so subjective, it lost all real meaning it once had?

and can actually do research
>Implying that I haven’t done any research. And that’s after I’ve already posted one statement that clearly shows that I’ve done more research about the subject than you.

not a rude anon who likes Mary Sues like Nyx.
There’s nothing rude about showing someone like you why you’re wrong. Also, those bolded words do not belong in the same sentence.

Go back to wooing these ponies, kiddo.

Are you sure you’re directing that at me, and not yourself?

Stop making this a war.
It’s guys like you that started the war with false notions. I’m just trying to expose those notions for what they truly are.
