Derpibooru Mobile for Android Released!

Update Jan 29, 2017:  
The latest update to the site code has broken the search feature.  
The application is abandoned until a new maintainer is found.

Further development of the application has ceased. Critical issues (e.g. startup crashes) are going to be addressed, but no upcoming features are planned.
 
You can get the latest version here. It has filters, complex searches, and image interactions (favorites, upvotes, and downvotes). As far as I know, and I could be wrong, this is the only mobile client that still supports Derpibooru.
 
If you’re comfortable with Java and willing to maintain the project, feel free to contact me. I’ll try to offer some help and advice.

Hey,  
a long-time pony fan there!
 
One day I was thinking, perhaps there’s something I can do for the wonderful community here? And think up I did — a mobile app would’ve been really nice to have!
 
So, the thing is, I’m an Android developer, and I’ve drafted up a rough version of what I see as the mobile Derpibooru. *Here are some pictures of what it can do.  
To be exact:  
— It respects filters, including your custom ones. It pops a spoiler picture when  
a tag is spoilered, it hides entries hidden by you.  
— It searches the booru (minding the filter, obviously). Custom search options are  
all here.  
— It seamlessly scrolls through image comments. Swipe down if you need to refresh ‘em.  
— It digs up info ‘bout the image — the uploader, description and tags.  
— It logs into your account, bringing your watched images to the main screen.
 
Now, about that last one. A concern may arise — quite understandably — upon trusting your credentials to a third party. The decision is entirely upon you. I can only add that e-mail and password are never stored on the device — only the cookies are.
 
With that being said…  
*You can download the APK @ GitHub, the source code’s also there.  
Unfortunately, Google Play rejected it outright due to “intellectual property policy issues”, which is, to be honest, not a big surprise really. I am looking into alternative distribution paths, but for now if you decide to give it a try you have to watch for the updates manually — the easiest way is to follow me *on Twitter.
 
As for the future:  
At the moment, I’m working on image interactions (upvote/downvote/fave). I’ll dedicate time to fixing stuff as well, as soon as bug reports appear.
 
The frequency of updates will depend entirely on your feedback!

How does the app load data from derpibooru?

When possible, it uses the JSON API, thought the latter does not cover certain use cases (authentication, for example), so for that the app relies on plain HTML parsing (behaving not unlike a browser).

An update for the thing’s out! An APK is available at GitHub. (Got no luck with app stores so far)
 
I’ve fixed a couple of bugs and added a spoiler toggle in image previews:

I know the app is still incomplete, but  
My Suggestions
 
-automatically hide the statusbar while viewing full screen images  
-Download & share options  
-option to hide comments/like indicator on the main screen  
-Number of Columns options, kinda like the Ponymotes app  
-Night Mode

Thanks for the suggestions! Night mode is actually on the issue list, sooner or later I’ll look into that. Downloading and sharing are a priority too, yeah.

How long before C and D?

People really don’t take into consideration the legal obligations that Hasbro has to protect their trademarks and Intellectual Property rights either.

What? I don’t get what you’re saying. What exactly is infringing on their copyright? The app? Because if that were the case, then technically Derpibooru and other MLP sites should be shut down.

If Hasbro has a trademark on a certain pony and they allow third-parties to use it without their permission the trademark can eventually be considered abandoned.

I mean, I didn’t really mention anything other than the bit about something making money or getting really popular, like Fighting is Magic and Jan’s stuff.

Doesn’t the app violate the play store’s content safety policies? The readme on the github suggested as much at least.
 
What strings did you have to pull to get it on the play store?

I prefer to think of it being in a gray area; I keep in mind that it can be discarded at any moment, though I don’t think it violates the rules more than the e621 app, and it’s been there for ages.
 
It turned out I simply had to remove screenshots that feature MLP imaginery. Oh, and write this as well

Oh, fair enough. Anyways I just installed the app and am digging it so far. Using it feels good but there’s not much to do at the moment, I’d like to be able to open a tag’s gallery by following the link in the tag labels under an image, like I would on the web version of derpi, but the tag labels on the app don’t do anything atm. Is there something that’s stopping you from implementing that, or have you just not got around to it yet?

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I know it’s rather limited by now. Actually, I’m going to do something about tags rather soon, it’s already on the list.
