You have few and majority reversed there, I’m afraid. The majority of downvotes on images come from people that consistently downvote the same content rather than filtering it outright. Downvotes born from actual “quality control” are the minority, by far.
 
Despite what people may like to believe, we don’t just cowboy this shit in. We have many months of stats and user behavior data here, not “feelings” or something.

Then why even have downvotes at all, are they somehow less valid opinions on pictures than upvotes? Why should you have to filter something instead of expressing you dont like the picture when you can express you like it?

You’re more than free to criticize images. And you can still very well downvote them. What you can’t do anymore is mass downvote a third of the images on a gallery page because “ew, not my fetish” or “I don’t like this character!”.
 
Which is sadly where the vast majority of downvotes on this site come from. People that don’t like ship X, but rather than filter it and move on, prefer to just downvote all images with that shipping tag from the thumbnail. Not because the image is bad, but because “eww. flutterdash, disgusting”.
 
And nevermind that a good amount of the people that downvote an image from the thumbnail then load the image, anyways. Yes, we actually know these things.

Downvotes were intended to be a way of actual quality control against troll posts, spam and other such things. People not liking theme X is why we have a filtering system, so you can filter out X and never have to see it again.

What about upvotes, since they have an exactly equal and opposite effect to downvotes?
 
Should I be upvoting almost everything with a certain tag, or would that be considered abuse?
 
In fact, why do votes matter at all? How often do people perform searches which are sorted/filtered by score?

Problem is filtering is a pretty blunt tool I’d say, occasionally stuff that one would otherwise be tempted to filter might contain something that is actually really good, but whatever.

Having people downvote an image because it’s a fetish they don’t like (and consistently doing so) screws up the scores on those images for the people that do like that fetish. Someone that’s into hyper-boob-reverse-futa-vore can’t properly use scores for anything because the images they’re looking for have been bombed by people that should have just filtered the tag and moved on. So congrats, your pettiness in preferring to press a downvote button a few dozen times over something you don’t like rather than pressing the “add to filter” button once has effectively trolled a possibly large number of users.

That is a problem with filters, not voting. We want to implement complex filters soon.
 
If there’s an image you absolutely do not like inside the group of content that you do want to see, then downvote away. Clearly you must not like it enough for it to merit the extra second and 3 clicks to open the image, downvote and close the image.

One final question:  
What about tags like “op is trying to start shit” or “bad art”? How do they factor into the voting guidelines, since on one hand they are generally low quality, but on the other they can be easily filtered?

As I said, we want to improve filtering so that you have a lot more granularity, but these things, they take time. If inside the compound of images you want to see you find something absolutely worth downvoting, then you still can.

You don’t see what we do, but trust me (insofar as you can trust “the man”), downvotes were an abused feature by people wanting to mass downvote content they could have filtered.

Honestly, Removing everything from a thumbnail and putting the info there instead? It’s a fine way of making everyone at least ‘reluctantly’ happy with the situation. You wont have gallery downvotes galore and people wont call you a big jerk for favoring upvotes and positive quality control instead of… Well. Garbage.
 
At the very least it’s an acceptable compromise.

I personally advise against filtering those tags as they’re rather subjective. “Hoof fetish” is a rather objective tag; there’s a character licking a hoof, or something. “OP is trying to start shit” is an opinion tag. I hate those myself, but whatever, mods touching those cause shitstorms.

OK, well, problem. I upload a lot of images. A lot of others do to. If I upload something I generally do a search for it, either by artist or characters or whatever, and if it’s there already, I upvote or fave it because I’ve already seen the image in full res. As an uploader, it feels like a dicking that I tried to upload something I like but was already there, and it feels like a further dicking that I have to leave the search page in order to upvote or fave what I wanted to upload (because as a rule of thumb if I upload something it’s because I like it).

We’ve given you a VERY good setup and you don’t like it because hurt feelings and “Muh statistics tho”  
We have given you a compromise that is VERY good despite our hatred for the fact that you took away the ability to just downvote images that we don’t like.

Just install the script I made and pretend nothing was changed*. There’s no point getting angry or frustrated over it. The admins know how you feel, so there’s not much more you can do to change the outcome.
