I’m not saying shorter bans aren’t possible, but for that ban on that day 5 minutes seemed better than 30 minutes, or 1 minute, or a day, or any of the other options. Some people were banned for much, much longer, some for shorter - it just depended on whether we wanted to give other people a chance to get attention, or to grab some space ourselves to catch up.
Imagine being on the other side of the 2-8 posts a minute from you, and then add a couple hundred people also posting, all of whom we want to give some attention to if we can. Also we were keeping track of who was getting badges for what by hand, so 5 minutes is a really short time to take a break during an event that lasts so long and has so much going on all at once. I might not be remembering properly, but your ban may have been combined with documenting what badge you should get, so … typing’s involved.
Sometimes it’s nice to get get a couple minutes to take care of things behind the scenes, and then pay attention to something else, when there’s so much going on.
