Hiding memes by default

May I ask if we can first get a quick way to add things to our tag list.  
Sorry but every time you make another tag hidden by default that I want to see I have to go to my setting and add it to my visible tag list every time, same for if I want to spoilered tags(only one in it right now), hidden tags(none right now), and watched tags.
 
It would maybe even shut some people that keep complaining about some of the image as they can’t be as lazy to not add it to their hidden tag list.

I think he meant that the walls of meme spam prevent artwork from being seen, not that hiding memes would do so.
 
 
My little example of searching for Cadance images of the last week kind of exemplifies this pretty well; there was so much “screaming armor” that after 3 pages I was frankly pissed.
 
Yes, I could have filtered out “meme” in my settings or the search; but if that’s something that we expect most users to do in order to use the site “properly”, then it should probably be a default, no?

Sure you can. I only ask this of Clover every other day. His response is “there are important bugs to fix first”.
 
So yes, a nice way to change your filters from anywhere on the site or to swap between presets of some kind is “a thing we want to do”. Sadly we have next to no manpower to implement these kind of things.

Then can you maybe have some note added to the rules or something to tell people not to bitch about seeing image they can filter out, I may not really like haveing to update my lists at times but I do it and  
I mean I am getting sick of the Godzilla tv meme post that pop up about ever day or so but it’s not tagged with a single tag I can filter out but I’m not going on them all and demeaning it not be posted or something(but I did talk about it on the last one yesterday)  
But I’m sick of some bitching about memes with a name and a tag for it that never seem to filter them out.

Memes, exploitables and lazy edits mspaint edits should be hidden by default.
 
It’s ridiculous that you guys allow them to run rampant.
 
I mean for christ sake, the vast majority of memes/exploitables are just obligatory ponies that people use to post non-pony stuff on the site.
 
Is unfair that sometimes we have to go through seas of obligatory pony crap so we can get to some actual MLP stuff.

True, and they are useless when most uploaders don’t care for proper tagging, specially meme uploaders.
 
Which bring us to the issue of how to enforce the proper tagging of those memes.

Some still complain even when they are tagged properly.  
I can understand if they start to have them hidden by default but only if they, like I said, had some note added to the rules to not bitch about something they can have filter, but choose not to when there is a proper tag for what they do not want to see.

Uh, what do you mean?  
That people still complain about stuff they don’t like but don’t have filtered or that people complain about stuff that they have filtered?  
If it’s the former then you are not making any sense. If people complain about something not being tagged properly is because they have it filtered, which means that they shouldn’t be able to see it if it’s properly tagged.

There are many users that don’t filter X content they dislike yet regularly go to said to tell us all how much they don’t like it. People love to hate.
 
Anyways, before I start hassling people around “officially”, show of hands for:  
-> Creating a new tag, ‘Exploitable Meme’ or ‘Copy/Paste Meme’  
-> Hiding that new tag by default  
-> Hiding the “obligatory pony” tag by default
 
Chances are this will go down as another poll. Should be pretty simple, as deletion/banning is not an option, and neither is spoilering.

This is one of the best damn fucking ideas ever.
 
Spoiler meme, hide exploitable turds, ban obligatory pony pictures outright = less shitposting

ohyes, I could live without all of that so hard.
 
That being said, we’d need a new tag for this. The reason is that some of the exploitable memes, eg >>443788, don’t have an obligatory pony per se. Then there’s also the very annoying case of ‘first person’ that is half filled with crappy memes like >>361226 but aren’t obligatory pony I guess, and then there’s also actual art in it.
 
Also TSP, if you go for ‘copy/paste meme’ as the tag, make sure to alias ‘copy paste meme’ and ‘copypaste meme’ to it from the beginning.
 
Bottomline: I’m all for making posting copy/paste memes as unattractive as possible.

If we just hide “obligatory pony” by default it would be so much better.

I don’t see how that people are part of the issue here.  
Yes, people will always complain about stuff they don’t like, not really much that can be done about that and shouldn’t be one the concerns here as long as it comes to actual MLP content. I mean, people complaining about certain stuff like a ship/oc/artist should be ignored for the most part because they are complaining about very specific content that they can filter if it bothers them so much, so it’s their problem if they don’t bother to learn about filters, if anything they should be reminded of the feature.  
Now, the difference of that with memes/exploitables, which are the actual issue in this thread, is that, when people don’t properly tag MLP content and leave someone else to do it, i see it more as a community effort, some upload, others tag. Yes, the ideal thing is if the uploader does all the proper tagging, but unfortunately that can’t always be the case for a number of reasons, and yes, i’m sorry for those who use filters and still end up seeing stuff they have filtered(i know how it is), but as i said earlier, it shouldn’t be that big of a deal as long as it’s actual MLP content and no rules are being broken, like uploading something explicit as safe. Again, is a community effort, BUT when it comes to memes/exploitables, people not properly tagging them, i see it more as expecting someone else to clean your trash.  
Why? Because:  
-Most memes are obligatory ponies that people use to post unrelated/non-mlp stuff on the site  
-Lack artistic merit  
-They are awfully repetitive and there is a crap ton of them
 
My idea to help enforce the proper tagging of memes is to make meme a rating tag. So instead of requiring safe rating, they can be tagged just as meme. It has worked for the other hidden by default tags.

I’m saying it would help if there was a note in the rule to not complain about what a person chooses not to filter as with adding memes to hidden by default then some may think “well this should be hidden by default too” and try to get it on things that just don’t like with no good reason.

Totally agree with the spirit of this idea. I hate having to hide every flavor of the month “fill in text here” meme that sprouts up, but I don’t want to just hide “meme” because it’s really broad and includes actual art.
 
There should be some kind of separation of the two. Maybe a separate tag for “template meme” would do the job?

So far there’s:  
“exploitable meme”  
“copy/paste meme” or some variant  
“template meme”
 
If that bit is up for discussion/vote/whatever then I personally prefer “template meme”

“template meme” works, we’d just have to establish a current (and easy to update) list of what counts as one. You know more are going to get made.

I kind of like “easy meme” myself. Is easy (…) to remember and to the point. “Template” might not work as there’s not always a real template, like blingee or whatever.
 
There’s already a sticky listing memes; pretty sure almost all of those listed there fall under this category.
 
Also Carcer/Clover will take over this as I don’t have much in the way of a real computer or internet. A poll to about the subject will happen some point soon.

I think there should be a checkbox at the top of the page, checked by default, that hides all memes (and other related things).
