If anything it’ll make it more useful by separating images that are legitimately bad enough to merit downvoting from image that contain some unpopular ship that you may want to see (and would get culled by score filtering).

I’m afraid unpopularity downvotes will still surpass bad image downvote and maybe even be more biased because of that new system. People are more likely to spend effort downvoting something they really dislike than downvoting something they like done poorly unless they clicked on the pic because it wasn’t obvious it was poorly done from the thumbnail.

I sometimes go on twentypercentcooler.net, another pony image board. It has the score, the number of faves, the number of comments, and the rating on the thumbnail but doesn’t allow you to vote straight away. However, the site often seems dead of activity, so I’m not sure if this is a valid argument since a fair amount of the images don’t have anything on them.

We have metrics and measurements. We experiment with these things. We’ll see how people behave, not how people predict they’ll behave, which is about as reliable an indicator as a random number generator.

Personally I don’t see the logic behind the most important counter being the number of other people who’ve faved it, and not the actual rating system.

Removing downvotes from thumbnails was a daft idea.
Yes, you can open an image that you don’t like, and downvote it. But that seems rather backwards.
“Oh, but you can filter it out!” Maybe, but if it’s just a poor quality piece of artwork of a tag you actually like, filtering won’t help.

We should have never had votes or faves from the thumbnail to start with. No other booru does it, for good reason; it forces people to actually look at the image before affecting the score.

If it were up to me I’d have removed all three. But hey, luckily for everyone it’s not.

Hey TSP, is it possible to change the colors of the star and the arrow on the pics fav and score counter? Its a pain in the ass to even notice that those are there. They are sooo tiny.

Why changes always makes little sense on the user end?

Making user look even more at the image they don’t like just to downvote them is a recipe for instant negative reaction. Hell, I’d really want to be able to hide tags from the thumbnail.

Also the favorite and upvote displays are black compared to the colored fave and yay buttons. It’s jarring after used to seeing more colors.

Removing the downvote buttons from the gallery makes it harder for users to give feedback on images, making feedback biased toward the positive and further invalidating the scores as a measure for how the community feels about images.

It doesn’t matter that sometimes people downvote well drawn images because they dislike the content. It shouldn’t matter if honest feedback is the goal. If you want everyone to mindlessly praise art and shut down any criticism and negativity deviantart is that way.

Also I miss the neigh because horse puns.

@The Smiling Pony
Other boorus force you to open each image to get a good view because the thumbnails are made for ants. On derpibooru with the nice large thumbnails you can see enough of each image to vote on it from the thumbnail. Just one of the reasons why derpibooru is functionally superior to any other booru.

So. Because some people (especially the mod team, and don’t try to lie about it) are all up in their emo tears about the bad feels they get from downvotes, you rip out a core functionality of something USEFUL and do it so incompetently you ensure your bandwidth expenditures are now larger than ever. All under the banner of “PROTECT THE ARTISTS!” who now receive nothing but an echo chamber of positivity, friendship, and encouragement to never ever improve if it hurts their FEEWINGS!

I have to click on an image to downvote it? Well, sorry guys, I’m now going to enjoy utilizing double or triple the bandwidth I did before (and so will everyone else, which I hope is mostly out of spite). Unless the mod team, all upset about my downvotes happening to be something they disagree with, remove them because I’m “abusing the system” and not filtering. Even when there’s nothing to filter because it’s just a badly drawn image. Oh wait, that’s right, everything is relative and nobody’s feelings can be hurt!

So based on popular sentiment in this thread alone, I say “the users” are more than a little annoyed at moderator stupidity. Maybe, next time, consider how people without power trips want on the site? I for one want the ability to LEAVE SCORED FEEDBACK without your BULLSHIT about feelings being hurt. This is an image host. Go play BAWW MY FEELS someplace that isn’t here.

Of course, given how little the mods care for feedback in this shithole, I’m sure my “feedback” will be sanitized for public viewing under the governing Fewwings Protection Act.

So based on popular sentiment in this thread alone, I say “the users” are more than a little annoyed at moderator stupidity

If you had read the thread carefully you may have noticed that one of the reasons behind taking away the “neigh” button was to avoid mass downvotes some people tend to do on a disturbing basis. It was not an act of: “oh, lets fuck this up. No one will care, we are stupid”. Also, to avoid people from downvoting just because of personal reasons, making them invest some time to actually open the pic, look at it carefully and then voting. It makes people stop being lazy.

Having said so, it should be also… uhm.. how to say this… balanced. The score system should be there, on top of the pic, but mods should also remove the “like” button so the ones that do like the pic also take a good look at it, socialize at the comments if they want, and upvote it.

Although that would make things slower for the ones that just browse for ponehs…

Hmm… quite complicated.

Oh, and before i forget

So let me see if i get it:

You want artists to improve, right? Right. So, leaving a positive score makes them feel good, but it doesn’t help them improve their art. Nice. So, why do you care so much about scores if what matters is leaving actual feedback in the comments section so the artist improves his/her art? You are complaining about something “insignificant” as a score when what truly matters is the actual written feedback?

Geez.

Go in, make the vote, go back. Go in, make the vote, go back. Go in, make the vote, go back…

Or, more simply, more processes from having to load the page for the image, register the downvote, then go back to the main page to continue browsing instead of staying on one page and making the vote there.

Now instead of downvoting based on an obvious lack of quality or relevancy based on thumbnail caching, the entire image has to be loaded (often times GIF images). I would have thought this would be obvious - but evidently not to you.

Had you read my post with anything more than a skim you would realize I’m refusing to believe the intention, due to the obvious fact the reality does not match the intention. Enacting rules for minority consequence, and punishing the majority for that minority, is not good policy. It’s American Politics quality policy.

Essentially, this plan is failure from its inception because it “fixes” something that isn’t an issue under the guise of a legitimate reason (which has an entirely different fix) for private reasons of special interests.

Those special interests, by the way, I happen to have talked to quite a bit on IRC. They’ve been plotting to remove downvotes for a very long time - big surprise they aren’t being honest about their intentions.

I can’t believe this needs explaining. Votes != comments, yes. They’re DIFFERENT types of feedback, as one allows quantitative feedback and the other allows qualitative feedback (in theory). What you want to do is remove the quantitative feedback, thus eliminating a bigger view of viewership. Why do you think almost every media content host in existence has votes? Do I really need to explain this shit? Jesus Christ.

And do I even need to bring up image sorting by votes? Which, by the way, is an important feature this is breaking?

No no, i get it takes more of your time to actually make the downvote happen. What i meant is, seriously complaining about using double or triple bandwidth that before? That would be a problem if you opened like 300 pics at the same time, or if you used to downvote like crazy each time you saw something you didnt like (filters) and now you must spend a few more seconds to downvote.

Certainly. Instead of being honest and simply telling the truth about wanting to remove downvotes since at least last year because people downvote things you like, you’re making up a story about how this somehow “helps” your user base.

This does not help the user base. This helps your interests. If you wanted to fix upvote/downvote abuse, here’s a protip: Add tags that are downvote hunted to the default filter.

See what I did there? I used your filter argument! In a way that actually works! Oh my God I must be a fucking genius!

Making things up isn’t very nice. IRC logs are, as I’ve learned to my detriment, pretty public. I’ve bitched about voting quite a few times, but my route’s always been to make it fully public, and that was before we had faves.

And I’m not sure what “interests” I have, or who those “special interests” are. I do know that you’re Pumpking Cake, and you were kicked off the IRC for being a bloody retard and full of ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH. And also that you weren’t in the IRC a freaking year ago.

The image loads AFTER the site has loaded. Considering some people used to downvote without opening the picture i just see a delay of around a few seconds to downvote. You are complaining because of a few seconds.

I suppose you dont realize that TSP is not the only mod/admin here, right? Wow, this whole thing sounds like a conspiracy, m8.

What you want to do is remove the quantitative feedback, thus eliminating a bigger view of viewership. Why do you think almost every media content host in existence has votes? Do I really need to explain this shit?

I suppose you dont realize that votes can be hijacked. Remember what happened with Justin Bieber who almost got sent to North Korea because /b/ played with the votes? The votes, on the long run, mean jackshit because it cant be compared to actual criticism, WRITTEN criticism. Voting does NOT help the artist, having the downvote button on the homepage or not. So this whole point of “helping the artist” is meaningless if we are defining helping with “votes”.
