Maybe it’s just me, but Katie Cook’s original work (her webcomics like Gronk and Nothing Special) tends to be a bit better than some of her MLP work. Probably because she’s working with her own characters.

Okay, I guess.
January’s sales numbers are out.
MLP FiM #62 (Rulers and representatives meetup) sold 8,839 copies.
Legends of Magic #10 sold 7,035 copies.
I suppose this is the year when the comic will reach the 5,000 copies red zone limit.

What’s their licensing deal look like? Would Hasbro cover their losses to keep the comic running? It’s as much an ad as the show.

Selling at a loss is a very common business strategy, especially when the market isn’t exactly thriving at the moment.
Sure beats shutting the whole thing down and miss out on being able to get all the staff back when there’s a resurgence in customer interest. Kinda like how the show shot itself in the foot by keeping most if not all it’s writers on a short, one-season leash. You gotta work to get them back afterwards.

The trades sell pretty darn well at bookstores. Honestly with kids books the trades selling do more to keep em alive then the floppies. So as long as the collections do well on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and the like IDW will keep the comic around. It’s their best selling all-ages title.
Plus there’s kids comics on the market that only sell around 4-5k that haven’t been canned yet. But it all depends on the publisher/licensor ,etc. And Hasbro & IDW are pretty buddy buddy.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is easily one of Marvel’s worst selling monthly floppies. The only reason why it hasn’t been canned is because it is one of their best selling Trade Paperbacks and always ends up being ordered like crazy by Scholastic for their book fairs.
Furthermore, the Monthly MLP Comics have rarely dropped out of IDW’s top 10 sellers for any given month. When they do, it’s usually because there is an event series being published that month. Even then the spin off title is the first to drop out of that short list, not the Friendship is Magic comic itself.

So basically Hasbro was going to punish everyone involved with IDW’s Hasbro comics just because of one asshole? Seems a bit harsh, but at least the matter’s been dealt with.

There are very few reasons to ever admit to anyone you were fired, rather than decided to leave on your own. Saying you were fired means:

- Everything bad they say about you is probably true
- You were such a pain to deal with that they’d rather get bad press and appear mean than not
- You’re throwing your former colleagues (and most likely friends) under the bus because they will get bad press
- You’re most likely in breach of your original contract by giving bad press, or in breach of contract for a severance agreement
- You’ve become unhireable - admitting you were fired is the nuclear option you use only if you’re changing industry entirely
Note that “Fired” doesn’t just mean “immediately kicked out”, but also “you aren’t working here anymore ever, so take three months’ wages, get out, and never talk about this again”.

It sounds like this Sitterson guy’s work:
- Was poor quality
- Included progressive politics
So anyone attacking the work was written off as a Trump voter, and progressive writers rallied to his side because of his politics. IDW and Hasbro got letter campaigns from both sides, but the 9/11 comments were the tipping point for Hasbro. Ryall tried to protect him, but for some reason broke the agreement with Hasbro.
And I say this as someone who’s shifted considerably to the Left over the last 18 months.

That is, if the situation is true. It seems plausible, and we know that IDW generally works really hard to protect its writers at any cost. I would assume that Ryall wanted to protect him because “giving in” to Hasbro’s demands would be a victory for the “right.” Ryall was basically willing to let IDW’s biggest partner walk because of pride.

See, that’s the part I really don’t buy. I honestly have trouble believing that Hasbro would threaten to completely cut all ties with them just because of one asshole.

Also IDW doing bad is just rumors started by a right wing comics hate group called Diversity&CMX.
IDW has actually had pretty moderate success overall for an independent publisher. Even expanded into doing boardgames not to long ago.
And given 4chan is mostly a place for alt-right loons & trolls. Yes take any and all things from there with many grains of salt.
