0/10 they didn’t kiss.
Too bad it’s a lesson I feel we’ve all learned far too much by this point: That you don’t need to be interested in the same things to be friends. Also, they’ve both been friends for years, so you’d think by this point both of them are completely used to the other’s eccentricities and interests. But RD and Rarity act like it’s new information that one likes athletics and the other likes fashion-related activities.
It might be somewhat of a lesson we’ve learned before, but not really for two ponies who have known each other
and regularly interacted with each other as long as these two have. I honestly think
gingerninja666 has the right idea on this one.
Rarity and RD had no reason to question their friendship. They get along because they have mutual friends and save Equestria together. it’s just the way things are and it’s worked for years. There was never a need to even think about it. But the school is a place where they need to actually sit down with students and explain all the fine details of stuff like this. I could see that making them stop and think: “Wait… why ARE we friends?”
There is some truth to the idea that you can get used to things that your friends do that might otherwise irritate you or that you have no interest in, to the point where you don’t notice them until someone else points them out. And both Rainbow Dash and Rarity have definitely been aware of this difference in their interests long before this point.
But absent the pointed question of why they continue to hang out together when they have so little in common, we can’t forget that they have also (in the past) actually shown appreciation for the other’s interest, albeit in their own way. Rarity, for instance, may not care much for the technical aspects of flying Rainbow Dash revels in, but as the episode “Sweet and Elite” showed, she does remember detailed things her friend has mentioned about the Wonderbolts, and demonstrates an appreciation for the pageantry and grand spectacle of the race itself.
Rainbow, of course, is kind enough to invite her to a high class function for the Wonderbolts in “Rarity Investigates!” (knowing she likes the chance to show off her glamorous attire)…
… and seems to appreciate her friend’s talent with fashion, even if hers doesn’t extend beyond wanting something “cool”.
So while it’s true that they don’t really have a lot of overlap in their primary areas of interest, they do find their own ways to appreciate and enjoy what the other has to offer when they aren’t being forced into it. Which the end of this episode both reinforced and showcased quite nicely.
@EotD
Starlight: Go fuck off Starlight. So apparently Miss fuck up the Universe is more an expert on friendship than Rainbow Dash and Rarity because of course she is. Oh and she’s so wise and knowledgeable to trick both of them and solve their problems because she’s just that good and kind and three other flavors of BS.
Are you sure you have the right episode? Because in the one I watched, her attempt to get Rainbow and Rarity back together failed completely, and she had to join forces with Spike and Twilight to help fix the issue.
Also, why not bring Starlight in on this? It seems like the sensible thing to do to me.
“Rainbow Dash and Rarity don’t always see eye to eye, but they’ve never been split to this extent. How can we get them to realize they really are friends?”
“Well, I could give it a try. I did have a a very similar issue with my own good friend, Sunburst.”
“That’s a great idea! And an effective use of established character traits and past episodes.”
“Yeah, I… wait, what was that last part?”
“What? I didn’t say anything. Nope.”
I mean people keep commenting that this episode has similarities to “Uncommon Bond”, and Starlight was both the main focus of that episode and the one who learned from it. Bringing her in on the same sort of issue now seems like a perfect choice.
