In-universe though, the Mane 6 are meant to be good teachers for the subject matter. Not showing that well is a problem, but they’re clearly supposed to be good.

It’s the same old “People who like what I don’t like are cretins who don’t care about what they consume” argument. Which is always annoying, especially since I DON’T like every episode of the show, and sometimes I do think characters are written poorly. But because I liked the finale (not that I found it flawless), I guess that means I don’t care.

You probably love them on a healthier level then. On a level of “these are great characters in a show” rather than “these are amazing friends I have in my life”

It seems people (like me) in the latter category are upset because our friends just skipped 30 years without us. And that doesn’t bode well.

Clearly, they are good at showing about how the meaning friendship works, but teaching it? No.

It brings you again that phrase that Celestia said that one time, that one about “Friendship cannot be learned from books or school, one must be earned from its own”.

Hell, even Muhammad Ali somehow agrees with that.

My reaction to the finale was closer to bittersweet pride honestly. Like “These girls I care about ended up having stable and happy lives. I won’t get to see them anymore, but they have each other, and they ended up doing the world a lot of good.”

Not true. I dislike some episodes that are considered great by huge sections of the fandom. Like Gauntlet of Fire. I also wasn’t that into The Perfect Pear, for instance.

I certainly don’t like being tarred with the brush that I don’t care about what I’m watching. And again, opinions on episodes are generally all over the map, with plenty of people loving, liking, disliking, or hating any given episode.

That still sounds like you are in the healthy camp of liking them though.

I know how pathetic that sounds but if you liked them on the level of actual real people - as in, the same or even more than RL friends you have - then that ending is nothing but sad to witness. Those friends are suddenly twice as old as they were before and they moved on without you and you missed all these years together…

While true, it still rather ridiculous that only Twilight accomplished anything. And despite attributing so much of her victories to her friends, they really should have come away with more than they did.

What I want to know is, were the mane five ever involved in ruling Equestria alongside Twilight? Because if not, then clearly all of Twilight’s fears came true.

The notion that they reduced their time together to once a month is also rather ridiculous, especially to justify Twilight’s endgame of ascending Celestia’s throne, which did NOT need to be an endgame for her because she was already doing just fine for herself in a career that would last her whole life.

First, because a lot of these problems that comment mentioned don’t feel like problems to me. Overall, it’s obvious the author didn’t like the episode. To each his own, but, unexpectedly, this leads them to frequently exaggerate things to their worst conclusion possible. It’s easier to overlook flaws on something you like, after all.

But specifically about that one paragraph:

Where is their reward for years of excellence? Where are titles, where are the boons due to heroes such as them? Nothing like it is even hinted at. They just continue their existences in almost the same way they were left in before the finale… only worse. AJ is still nothing more than a farm owner. RD is just replacement Spitfire. Fluttershy is just forever stuck in her sanctuary and the shipping dimension. Pinkie is a dutiful housewife and baker and nothing more. And Rarity… did she just MOVE TO THE FREAKING YAKS? Yona and Sandbar living in her boutique or something? What in the actual untitled goose game is even going on there?

Although gingerninja stated it better than me, i’ll still say - how are these problems? We spent the last nine seasons seeing them reach these ambitions, and to me, them throwing these away to become rulers would be not only out of character (especially for Applejack) and would pretty much make all that time we spent on their character arcs effectively meaningless plotwise.

As for Rarity, i personally saw that as either opening a boutique in Yakyakistan or studying how to create designs for them, given she had previously on the episode mentioned the possibility of opening branches for non-ponies.

I also didn’t see the events of the coronation on that light.

And in regards to these:

even had trustworthy ponies to help them take care of or take over their mundane life things

That’s already happened. Most likely Yona and Sandbar were in the boutique for that reason. And the Sugar Belle thing? we were shown that too.

This is not a celebration of friendship – this is an ending to a friendship. And I dunno about you, but I don’t think the end of a friendship-themed show should necessarily feature the friends drifting apart and no longer being friends – if anything, I think the opposite should be true.

Which is not what happened either - they did drift apart, since they got their own problems to take care of, but this doesn’t mean they aren’t friends anymore. Luster Dawn was jumping to conclusions there.

It’s so bad, it makes me think that, despite Twitter assurances to the contrary, the production people actually intended to forestall any further fan work about “what happened next” with this epilogue – to stamp their one last final mark on the show by cauterizing it, so no further growth from it is possible and all turns to a foregone (and unsatisfying) conclusion.

This is selling the fans’ creativity short. AUs are always a possibility, people still ship even when their ship has been sunk in canon, and the epilogue is not definitive enough to effectively stop fanfics dealing with what happens after it or in the meantime between it and the finale. It only is if one doesn’t want to deviate from canon.
