So I just saw Twilight’s Seven, and it was really good.
The theme of Season Nine is that of closure. A lot of the time, closure doesn’t mean “it’s over”, but rather “things are going to be okay”. The Beginning of The End shows us that The Mane Six can use The Elements of Harmony without physical representations. Uprooted shows us that The Tree of Harmony lives on. Twilight’s Seven shows us that Canterlot is stepping up its security.
On top of that, the season is about the cast and crew taking their bows. In this episode, the tertiary siblings (Maud, Shining Armor and Zephyr Breeze) take theirs. There’s not a whole lot to analyze; it’s a twenty-two minute victory lap by the talented people who voiced the main characters; celebrating just how much there is to reincorporate. I loved all the little references, and it was even nice to see Twoiloight Sporkle’s Buhloon again.
Just a few stray thoughts:
I really liked the sibling motif. It really brought things together.
Twilight and Shining Armor’s sibling rivalry was friendly and good-natured. Who could have seen that coming, except literally anyone who doesn’t turn their brain off the second they encounter a potential plot hole?
I like how no lesson was really learned. Getting rid of the obligation to end every episode with a lesson helps cement how much the main characters have grown, and gives the writers more freedom.
I talked about reincorporation, but I especially liked the detail about the remains of Chrysalis’ throne.
