Yep Spike has always been my favorite when I was introduced to the series way back in 2012.
 
Maybe it’s because he was a dragon or one of the few male characters that were prominently shown at the time that drew my attention to him.
 
However, I noticed that his character was very much a wildcard in a sense. He’d go from being the the slapstick humorous guy to the reliable sidekick to many other various roles he could fit and that made him very versatile.

I picture older Spike as being the tank of the group; able to take great amounts of punishment so the others can do their thing.

That’s why I like him too. He’s kind of a unique character in that sense.

Idea for an episode.
 
Spike gets into a comic book series. He’s mortified when he finds out said series is meant for little fillies, and tries to hide the fact that he likes it.
 
It could be a metaphor for being a brony.
