It’s considered to be an almost unanimously hated episode, but I love it.

No kidding? I didn’t love it but I don’t remember anything objectively bad about it or being like “Oooooh a lot of people are going to hate that”. Is it just the episode as a whole, or something specific about it? :P

Pretty much my reaction. I didn’t think it was remotely good and I disliked how Pinkie was handled but as a whole I thought it was….an episode, I liked the rest of the mane six in it at least. It’s not a good episode but the show’s done much worse, even in S8 alone
 
Most of the episode’s hate comes from how Pinkie is handled, but there was enough in the episode I liked that I didn’t mind it too much

People didn’t get the moral and thought it was saying that doing whatever you want is good, even if it harms everyone else. I think that getting that from it is a total stretch. It’s just about how it’s okay to have hobbies even if you aren’t really “good” at them in other people’s minds. I think it’s a great lesson and that the episode was absolutely hilarious.

It’s funny too, considering the whole “Doing whatever you want is good even if it harms other people (as long as you’re a protagonist)” thing was basically the moral of Boast Busters, The Best Night Ever, Lesson Zero, Luna Eclipsed, Mystery on the Friendship Express, every Starlight episode ever, and Twilight’s School of Friendship in it’s entirety, and those are the only ones that came to mind XD

Yakity-Sax would’ve been a better episode if Pinkie’s sadness came more from her discovering that her playing weren’t making her friends happy, which is what she is all about.
 
I feel like that was the original intention, but it was lost in translation when it came to the writing.

The episode showed that Pinkie was oblivious to the damage she caused and that she valued an instrument more than her friendships. Of course it was divisive.

That’s a really good point- it does feel like something got lost somewhere, doesn’t it? I like “Yakity Sax” because it’s a fun episode and has an uplifting moral (“don’t let others’ disapproval stop you from being who you are”). That said, it really wasn’t the strongest episode the series has. Far from the worst, to be sure, that’d be “Shadow Play”, but still not good.

If Pinkie and the reasoning behind her sadness were written better, Yakity-Sax could’ve been a pretty good episode. That’s really the only problem the episode has.

Okay, fair enough. Still, at least the whole “oblivious to the damage she’s causing” thing does seem in-character for her :D

I’d rather listen to the doowop, 1950’s song the title was inspired by on loop ad nauseam than watch that episode again.
 
Being for real, the episode sucked big time but the one silver lining is that I feel like the moral could’ve been good or even great if the rest of the plot didn’t undermine the message.

The biggest problem with Yakity-Sax is how everything that happens during the first half is just forgotten. The fact that Pinkie’s friends wanted to stop her from playing because she was actively damaging their lives is just dropped and doesn’t come back.
 
If it wasn’t for that, there wouldn’t be people misconstruting the moral.

I getcha, it’s just that it’s not the first time that’s happened. Like, the entire premise of Bats was exactly the same: Fluttershy cares more about some bats than the well-being of her friends, and the fact that the bats could easily destroy Applejack’s farm and livelihood is dropped part-way through. I guess maybe Yakkity Sax didn’t have enough other stuff to carry it above that :P
