Too many memes for my taste.
 
I mean, I laughed hard that they actually pulled Fluttershed, but I’m not exactly sure that’s something should be made official.

It’s a fun, light hearted manga that only wants to entertain the reader and does it on spades. In fact, the first story is about Pinkie Pie playing with a magic mirror, and turns out miles better than that other official comic that tried to do the same with another magic mirror, paralel characters and a paralel Equestria.  
Derpy and Discord’s chapters are so great that they should have been used as TV episodes.

It used the right amount of memes and nods, as opposed to the usual avalanche one gets from Price and Cook’s comics. I will agree that the Shed reference was a strange choice, though.

Speaking of the comics, I stopped by a comics store today and they had both Friends Forever and IDW. For those of you who read the comics, which ones do you recommend?

I still think that Princess Twilight is the most mishandled story arc of the show purely because of what it could have been

I mean like, most of the time IDW’s rarely ever factor into the plot. It’s typically a drive-by background joke. But here Time Lord Doctor Whooves was a central plot point so that one was inescapable.

Depends on the volume. Some issues can be must reads while others can be take-it-or-leave-it.

Aside from a bad period in the middle of the FF comics where they were more obsessed with spotlighting the writer’s OCs, the FF is pretty consistent and probably my favorite comic line. I got quite a mouthful, but my favorites are FF#3(Celestia and Spike), FF#6(RD and Trixie), FF#11(RD and Spitfire), #12(Pinkie and Twilight), #13(Rarity and Babs Seed), #15(AJ and Mayor Mare) #17(Twilight and Big Mac), #23(AJ and Fluttershy), #24(Rarity and Gilda), #26(Blueblood and Shining Armor), #29(Rarity and Maud Pie), #34(Pinkie and Cheese Sandwich), and #36(RD and Soarin, this one is my favorite of the entire lot).
 
Those are what I feel are the absolute best but there’s still plenty of good ones I still worth reading like CMC/Discord, RD/Twilight, and Pinkie/Luna.
 
The Main series are a lot harder, to me they seem to be more of an acquired taste, though I think the best ones are the small Slice of life stories, and you’re better off staying away from most multi-comic arcs(two parters are mostly harmless, but most of the 4-parters are dreadful)

Friends Forever has a much more stable track record than the main comic arc, for sure.

It’s published by IDW, has the same teams, largely the same plot structure, etc. To put it in show terms, FF is a series of Map Episodes (2 or more characters are paired up for the focus and do a plot) while the main line of comics are just normal episodes which have no set theme.

IDW comics: Oh no, Twilight’s been turned to stone! This must be the evil work of Not-cord, a super evil chaos villain who’s totally existed for thousands of years and isn’t a ripoff of Discord. Better fap about for three issues only for some random thing set up in the first issue to instantly resolve everything in an anticlimactic way
 
EQG: Oh no, Twilight’s been turned to stone! This must be the work of some random magic thingy someone got ahold of. Better joins hands and magic girl transform to shoot a Rainbow laser and reform whoever got that magic doodad
 
Show two-parters: Oh no, Twilight’s been turned to stone! This must mean it’s Starlight’s turn to undergo some kind of personal anxiety attack which by the resolution of this story will be solved, cause only magic anxiety driven unicorns/ alicorns can do stuff and have characters motivations in two partners. Best to let the rest of us either be in the background, tonally deaf comedic relief or get captured.
 
Show SOL: Oh no, Twilight’s been turned to stone! And she told me not to tell anyone what she was doing! Now for me to spend twenty minutes debating what to do and getting into comedic situations despite having nine seasons worth of character development and continuity which should inform me on what I already need to do.
 
Manga: Oh no, Twilight’s been turned to stone! Hey Princess Celestia, you wanna dress her up in silly hats?

(Come to think of it, that matches the actual episode where that happened a lot better than the Show ones.)

The funny part was how Celestia had so much fun dressing a petrified Twilight with silly hats and capped it with a fake moustache after reminding Pinkie Pie that it wasn’t polite to make fun of a patrified friend.  
Manga Celestia is basically what Celestia used to be during S01 and 02.

I want more SFW art of good OCs and less porn of random OCs (Yeah, I guess this is an unpopular opinion…)

So is the “manga” like a 4Koma kind of thing? That’s what I heard it was supposed to be anyway.

Couple things, though. The comics would probably do things in several ways. Twilight probably wouldn’t be the one turned to stone, and if she were, she’d probably manage to release herself on her own. She’d also free whomever was turned to stone, and then proceed to use some extremely powerful and convoluted magic to resolve the plot.
 
That is, assuming she isn’t overshadowed by a writer’s OC.
 
And as for the two-parters, it’d be either that, or Starlight getting worfed herself and requiring rescue.

As I’ve said before, I don’t think that’s accurate at all. I don’t think Twilight’s resolved a plot in the comics for years. The latest arc worfed her in the first issue!

I think that’s one of the (very) few places comics have been improving lately, like the writers have figured out that bullshit deus ex machinas and overpowered characters just aren’t cutting it anymore and are relying more on the overall team effort to save the day.

That would be assuming IDW and/or it’s writers ever want to work with a character like Starlight. Yknow how being heavily reprimanded for doing something or strongly restricted as to what you can do with an element tends to make you not want to do anything with it? Yeah….

Before it all ends I want a story with all the Mane 6 parents.
