Either way regarding the circumstances of what happened, Applejack only wanted to attend to provide and help her home and family, which is a selfless thing if you compare her expectations to the others who only wanted to do things that they wanted. Not to say that it was a bad thing or anything since we humans in general like to go places to do things that we like but from a moral standpoint, Applejack’s was easily the best.

i don’t think so. blueblood was a jerk to a woman who was into him for his fame and money, trixie was standing up to bullies, and gilda ruined a party. doesn’t hold a candle to (in order) being an abusive parent, emotionally blackmailing a woman into endorsing your product, enslaving others and trying to destroy the world for no valid reason, enslaving others and trying to destroy the world for no valid reason, and grabbing a kid by the throat and shaking them.

I think by that point, Scootaloo was like a teen by the time that episode aired.

No that’s called a “scapegoat”, they could of had a mini arc for diamond tiara about her trying to be nice and getting use to it; apologizing to the cmc for being mean to them and earning their trust and friendship , it would of fit the show “friendship is magic” lesson better than having all of that happen in one episode.

i would have agreed. in fact until that scene i considered her and blueblood to basically be the same: incompetent pompous buffoons who inexplicably got to positions of power. i called her out for being a jerk and a bad leader but didn’t think she was a terrible person at heart. then she picked up a kid by the neck and shook her, all the while screaming in the kid’s face. i’ll grant that it was meant to be over the top for humor, but it doesn’t change the fact that it shoved her violently from “incompetent leader” to “child abuser”: how are we supposed to shrug that off as a joke in the exact same episode where scootaloo being put at risk for bodily harm by a different character is meant to be taken seriously?

perhaps, but that changes very little. grabbing an adult by the throat and shaking them for no real reason is pretty inexcusably savage.

I thought it was funny admittedly, but if you look at it deep enough, then yeah it is basically assault and a violation of someone’s personal space.

Dude her name is literally ‘spoiled rich’ she was not designed to be a character for people to like or sympathize with. Sure I agree that it’s shallow to create a character solely for hate, but you can’t pretend like she’s not a bad ‘person’ even on a basic level.

it’s not that it wasn’t funny, like homer strangling bart is funny, it’s that it’s still a horrid act all the same. it also creates a massive flaw in the episode: so we’re supposed to see lightning dust as bad because she doesn’t care if scootaloo gets hurt. that’s totally fair, except then why does spitfire strangling scootaloo pass without mention? is the risk of scootaloo getting hurt in that episode an issue or not?

Strangly, as Spoiled Milk she comes off as surprisingly OK.

I mean no offense, but this is a topic that’s pretty much brought up a lot every other day on here so I’m more or less growing less wary about it.
 
But to answer your question: I guess it’s because it can be excused as Spitfire “doing her job” and teaching Scootaloo a lesson when it comes to not doing reckless and stupid things. As for my own two cents about it, I just thought they played that for laughs considering that Spitfire was acting so over the top and exaggerating things that she wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. From a moral standpoint, yes it was horrible and cruel what she did that I’ll say, but the sequence was so ridiculous and over the top that I don’t feel outraged and offended as much as you or the others did. And it wasn’t like she was punching the poor girl and threatening to throw her out of the sky or anything.

Can we agree that it’s no more “unambiguously evil” than Trixie or Gilda’s behaviour, which brings us full circle ot the original point?

eh, if “doing their job” means grabbing some kid by the neck and shaking them, then they’re a hell of a lot worse than someone who “doing their job” means telling a kid who volunteered to do dangerous stunts to do a dangerous stunt.
