How Dare You: While in Appleloosa, Applejack and Rainbow Dash are approached by Little Strong Heart, who says that “a thief who moves like the wind” has been trying to steal the sacred treasures of her people. They talk to the buffalo and agree to help, with Applejack asking the townsponies about any suspicious newcomers, while Dash helps the buffalo keep watch. When the intruder arrives, Dash gives chase… And is shocked to discover that the would-be thief is none other than Daring Do, who claims the Flute of Howling Wind is too dangerous to be left with the buffalo, and demands that Dash help her retrieve it!
Rainbow Dash replies that the buffalo have a right to what’s theirs, and refuses to steal from them without knowing the full story. Once Daring retreats, Dash briefly returns to the buffalo, telling them only that their thief has been driven off, at least for the night, before hurrying back to Applejack, needing to talk.
The next day, as Rainbow Dash sleeps, Applejack visits the buffalo to ask about the Flute of Howling Wind. An ancient artifact containing their most powerful magic, the Flute is used in times of great crisis to call a guardian entity known as the Thunderbird. Generations ago, the Thunderbird had been called to defend their people against the Great Horned Serpent, but the Flute vanished without a trace shortly after, and had been missing for so long that even Chief Thunderhooves had begun to believe it only a myth, before being found in a cave in the badlands with strange markings on its walls that had been opened by a recent rockslide.
That night, Daring returns and is once more confronted by Dash, causing a commotion that draws buffalo and pony alike as they chase each other through the air, the confrontation zigzagging through the town and eventually towards the apple orchard. When they land, Dash is tied up and Daring is lighting a torch, threatening to start a fire unless the Flute is handed over. Applejack calls her bluff, but Daring claims there’s too much at stake.
At this, Chief Thundehooves steps forward, holding the Flute. Daring begs him to put it down, but instead he raises it to his mouth and plays a short song before telling Daring that the Thunderbird will deal with her.
At this, Daring lets out an exasperated laugh and tells him that she thought he knew the truth. She’d translated the cave runes, and while the Flute speaks with the voice of the Thunderbird, its call is a challenge to the Great Horned Serpent!
From there, obviously, there’s the big monster fight scene, a moral about the importance of making sure everyone’s on the same page, and everypony (and everybuffalo) making amends before Daring trots off into the sunrise with the Flute, which Chief Thunderhooves is now perfectly happy to be rid of.
…Sorry if that was a bit long. I wanted to make sure Daring didn’t come off
too badly. Hope I did okay.
