It’s clear that Fogerty was the main creative mind behind their best stuff. It’s just a shame that nobody was functioning well on that album. He was totally in the right, though.

I know Todd painted him as being an overcontrolling prick, but there was a lot more behind the scenes, including a lawsuit that left John in its debt for years. This video goes into significantly more detail.

That would be The Great Cow Race! That was the second Bone book.

Believe it or not, the Bone books were banned in some schools. The offensive content was smoking (which was mostly done by the Great Red Dragon), drinking (which is expected in a fantasy environment), and violence (which, again, is expected). Curiously, Thorn’s frequent fanservicey moments were not ban-worthy.

Ooh, an old Jeff Smith comic from the ’80s that was a predecessor to Bone just resurfaced!

This is interesting. Jeff made these comics while he was a student at Ohio State, and was planning on continuing the Thorn series as a comic strip, but newspapers weren’t interested in adventure comic strips with arcs, so he ultimately made it into the graphic novel we know and love.

Many of the same elements from Bone are here—Thorn, Gran’ma Ben, the Bone cousins (although Smiley doesn’t appear until way on down the line), the Hooded One, the Rat Creatures—but the tone of the comic is way different and has a satirical edge. Instead of being a high fantasy type of environment, the level of technology is much less clear. There are televangelists, one of the characters namedrops Adidas shoes, there’s a character who’s a satire of Ronald Reagan, and Jeff Smith himself even appears as a recurring character. Also, Thorn herself is way more openly fanservicey. (Perhaps fitting since it was a college comic rather than being aimed at older kids and teenagers.)

Smith currently has a crowdfund set up to get this published. I may buy this at some point, though I’ll probably try to get the rest of the Bone saga first. (I only have Out from Boneville, Eyes of the Storm, and Treasure Hunters in my collection.)

Basically, that it keeps getting skipped over so people can immediately switch to Christmas mode. Which annoys me too, FWIW.

What annoys me more is that Christmas gets getting pushed back to before Halloween. I was seeing Christmas ads in early October this year.

I’m well aware (I actually lament how Thanksgiving is consistently skipped over in most American culture), though this was the next oneshot comic and I don’t think there’s a Thanksgiving comic.
