There is some surveillance law rework going on in the US, but instead of improving the situation, a recent proposal might significantly worsen it.

@Poison Trail
Overall I agree, but…
It takes about 1 soldier per 25 civilians
It takes less if you don’t have to respect human rights, due process, and can use brutal methods. It’s Russia we are talking about. Remember how those terrorists that attacked Crocus City Hall were treated? They would be treated even worse if they weren’t expected to be shown on camera and to stand trial. Same applies to Ukrainians.

The cash being spent on the Ukraine war is an overwhelmingly high return investment, not only because it’s funding the US local economy as opposed to that bullshit “We’re airdropping pallets of cash in a warzone!” narrative, but also because of the cost-effectiveness of weakening Russia. A disposable rocket launcher being used to take out a multi-million dollar tank for example.
Even in the scenario that Kyiv is overrun, there is still going to be an active resistance effort. Despite all of their numerous fuckups, Russia is still on the easy part of the war. There’s no such thing as taking a city, stomping your feet and claiming it to be yours, you’ve still gotta hold the territory until there’s a proper takeover without fear of reprisal made easier by, yknow, weapons donated to the effort.
It takes about 1 soldier per 25 civilians to effectively suppress the chance that the local occupying force ends up being vulnerable to the resistance effort. That’s trained soldiers, not just conscripts that have no idea about enforcing shifts just so you don’t end up having your throat slit and your barracks firebombed overnight.
So yeah, those weapons, which are manufactured and benefit the US economy before being sent overseas are very cheap compared to the benefits they bring. Similarly, Russia spends shockingly little to bribe and blackmail Republicans while using troll farms to flood social media with “Bothsides” bullshittery, that’s their high return investment right now.

Fall of Kabul
Ukrainians do believe in Ukrainian statehood and Ukraine actually wants to defend itself. The situation in Afghanistan was that most Afghans either wanted the Taliban to rule or at least were not willing to fight them.

Is funding the Ukraine sustainable in the long run, though? Or are we simply pushing back the date of Fall of Saigon/Fall of Kabul situation? In the meantime, compare to the utter madness of funding an active genocide…

After a few hiccups, the jurors in Trump’s hush money trial has finally been selected.
This is the least serious out of his 4 or so cases, both in wrongs committed and in punishments possible, but it will act as a weathervane for how the others play out.

Abortion is the big thing outside the presidency on November’s ballot. But there are still other issues on the line. Like the legalization of weed. If we want that then we need a high voter turnout.
I repeat. Voter turnout needs to be high.

I love how the media still wanks Trump.
Per Politico.
“But Biden’s margins are far slimmer — or nonexistent — among other key demographics. He’s just 6 percentage points ahead of Trump among likely voters who are young men, according to the poll, and just 3 points ahead among white voters. When it comes to young people without college degrees, Biden and Trump are in a dead heat.”
This is presented as Trump cutting into Biden’s edges, as it’s in an article about how Biden’s edge with younger voters is smaller than previously.
But notice something, that poll showed Biden in the lead with white voters and tied for younger voters without a college degree.
Trump led in both of those groups in 2016 and 2020. But this article frames this as a Biden problem, because the gap is slow narrow…despite showing Biden actually doing better than 2020.

Act like a howler monkey unable to be subtle about being a Russian asset, don’t be shocked to be labelled as one. Feels like it should go without saying, but hey, sometimes you really just gotta go for the throat when it comes to bad actors going masks off.

I still think Florida is Safe Trump, because no one who has seen the 2022 results - not to mention the population trends of reactionary boomers moving to the state and the desolate condition of the Florida Dems - believes the state is still competitive. It would have to take a gargantuan leftward shift to get it back to 2008/2012 levels.

Biden is gaining ground on Trump in Florida.
Trump is still leading, but his double digit lead is dropping into the high single digits.
Normally this wouldn’t matter, but that abortion ballot initiative changes the game.
Odds are still against him, but if Biden wins Florida it will be 100% because of that.
