I’m actually afraid this new show may fall into the chess-piece storytelling slog that Shyamalan’s movie did. Where it becomes all actions and no motivations, no character depth that makes the actions worthwhile.

But still, it’s like what’s even the point in removing that earlier part about Aang’s more immature characterization for the sake of advancing the plot, when they’re also removing the very reason the plot is supposed to be advancing?

TBH, I have a lot of issues with the way the new showrunner is promoting it. Like how he seems to be scrubbing Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko of their flaws—having Katara’s mom be killed in a spirit attack rather than a Fire Nation rade, removing Sokka’s early sexism, and giving some of Zuko’s war crimes to Zhao—and thereby scrubbing them of potential character development. Or the fact that he compared the new show to Game of Thrones, which… can we agree that comparing your adaptation to a series that notoriously dropped the ball and wiped out a lot of the goodwill people had towards it is not great in any case?

You know what throws me off about this is?

They got rid of Aang’s desire to ride animals on the way to the North Pole so he could learn waterbending, which is nuking some his character development… but now they’re also getting rid of the very driving factor for him getting to the North Pole to learn waterbending as soon as possible.

So they’re doing the thing where they follow strict screenwriting guidelines where every scene has to progress the plot… but removing an actionable goal. Does not compute.

I just realized something. This was the point where I knew that Sir Pentious was a goner:

It always goes back to Hamilton.

That makes sense. It’s a good dynamic! Especially when the goofy guy also has some unexpected hidden depths. Stuff like Toph X Sokka, Hiccup X Astrid, and Rayla X Callum hit the spot.

I’ve noticed that one of my favorite ship dynamics seems to be “Badass fighter girl X goofy guy.” What does that say about me?

Also, I wonder how knowing that Vaggie was once an angel, and an exterminator at that, will affect Charlie’s relationship with her. It will certainly put a strain on it at least.

Just finished episode 6. Some assorted thoughts:

Don’t know how I feel about Cherri Bomb now having an Australian accent. I’ll probably get used to it like I got used to Millie’s Southern accent in Helluva Boss.

”Welcome to Heaven” feels like the weakest and most unnecessary of the songs so far. Maybe that’s just because I know we’ll be in for another song later this episode.

Hot damn, seeing Angel finally stand up to Val was awesome.

HOLY CRAP. Erm. So I got to the Vaggie twist. That… certainly puts a new spin on things. Also, ow, I felt it when her eye was gouged.

DAMN. They really just went full Sondheim on us in that final song, huh?

Final question: How many days has it been since the first episode? At the beginning, Adam said the extermination would take place in six months, but now he’s saying it will begin in a month. Did a lot of time pass, or did he just move it up once again just to punish Charlie?

Oh, also, every complaint and nitpick people have had regarding angels looking indistinguishable from demons, Adam being a piece of shit, why Heaven allows the exterminations to happen if they’re so high-and-mighty, and what sends people to Hell vs. Heaven? All of those have been addressed with episode 6. Plot twist: The show actually answers questions if people wait long enough. Who’d’ve thunk?

Hazbin Hotel episode 5 spoilers:
Lucifer was so not what I expected. I think I was expecting him to be an abusive father or at least a disapproving asshole, as I think all of us were, but it turns out he’s surprisingly sincere about being jaded because of his own dreams failing and just wants to protect his daughter from the same happening to her. Also, the song they shared was legitimately heartwarming.

I love how that was actually said in the show lmao

NGL, it kind of saddens me that Lackadaisy, Hazbin Hotel, and The Amazing Digital Circus probably won’t be nominated for anything this awards season on the basis of being online and adult-oriented.

Like, 2023 was the year for independent animation, and expanding the boundaries of the medium beyond just being kids’ fare, and it’s like they’re getting no recognition. They blew Disney out of the water, FFS!

That was a lot of fun. I can already sense that Angel is going to feel left out. Reminds me of the “Addict” music video.

I mean, there are even a ton of disclaimers at the beginning of every episode telling you it’s not for kids. Anyone who still watches only has themselves to blame if they’re shocked at the adult content. These are the exact same complaints levied against The Simpsons in the 80s. It’s just gone from “Cartoon are for kids” to “Well-animated cartoons are for kids.”

Awww, that is heartwarming. I’ll admit, I’m gonna miss them, especially Michael Kovach as Angel Dust, but I’m glad they gave us that final sendoff.

It really is. I’ve heard people legitimately argue it, and I’m just like… bruh. Haven’t we all been clamoring for different-looking adult cartoons for years now?

We have been Stockholm syndrome’d by the Family Guy art style. Anything that looks visually appealing is now made for little kids.

Has anyone else seen the criticism that “The animation in Hazbin Hotel looks too good for an adult cartoon”?

The criticism is that the animation looks too much like a kids’ cartoon, and therefore kids may be fooled into watching it. Never mind the disclaimers at the beginning of every episode.

I’ve heard the criticism before that the Hell doesn’t have explicit punishments, like they aren’t in constant agony or getting tortured or whatever, but honestly, I love how Hell is essentially just a more extreme Los Angeles. Because the punishments are still there: It’s the other sinners there. Just living there among the truly awful people who get sent there is Hell enough.

Here’s a dystopian thought I just had.

Charlie keeps insisting that demons are just people who made a mistake, and it’s been shown before that even the slightest momentary lapse of reason sends you straight to Hell–even the cherubs in Helluva Boss got sent down for accidentally killing someone. So why are the only sinners we see in Hell the murderers, perverts, rapists, cannibals, extremist of the extremes?

Well, if we’re going by own theory, that the Hell is more self-made than imposed on them with explicit punishments, the reason we only see the extreme ones is because the ones who aren’t extreme don’t survive.

So demons who were sent there just for, I dunno, cheating on their wives one single time, they have two options: Either adapt to Hell, which means bringing out the worst in themselves, or risk dying. Because if the angels don’t kill them in the extermination, the other demons certainly will.
