This is how I think about the things that I watch:

There are things you can criticize G5 for. For example, the writing for early MYM lacks the same wit and self-awareness that ANG had. And while I love the extra detail in the facial expressions, a lot of the action lacks a satisfying “juice”, and can feel “floaty”. This is especially noticeable in Chapter One, and I think it also drags down the action in Chapter Six. The overarching story also needed an extra complication or two. There are some continuity hiccups between MYM and TYT.

But in my humble opinion, the worst of G5 is just sort of bland. There’s nothing as fascinatingly bad as The Mysterious Mare-do-well or A Friend in Deed. Nothing base-breaking like Alicorn Twilight, Starlight’s backstory, or The Grogar Twist. No really weird implications, like Granny Smith being hundreds of years old.

In the grand scheme of things, I think both G4 and G5 are pretty unremarkable. G5 just happens to do a bunch of things I wish G4 did.

What are your negative G5 reviews?

Honestly something that irritates me is when g5 fans to defend (especially MYM) refuse to acknowledge any mistakes and they do exactly what they accuse g4 fans of doing, treat the generation as if it were perfect and reject those who criticize it (I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen but one error doesn’t justify the other)

someone who only speaks well has as much credibility as someone who only speaks badly.

While we have to face facts that we cannot change people’s minds on G5, at least you did defend G5 without getting banned or be considered mentally ill.

How is it lacking in soul? The animation has so much personality:

Nothing G5 does is ever as corporate as adding new alicorns to sell toys, then never developing the alicorns.

The characters get plenty of development. Even the side characters get development.

Sparky’s fine. He serves a function to the plot, and he gives Hitch a challenge to overcome.

That’s pretty vague.

Opaline is a foil to Sunny. She’s a purposeful corruption of what an Alicorn is supposed to be. She thinks she deserves to rule because she belongs to a race of immortal demigods. She’s a dark mirror to MYM’s overarching themes of “Rebuilding” and “Found Family”. She sticks around long enough to get character development, instead of being defeated after two episodes and never coming up again. She has interactions with the heroes, and her power level makes her an appropriate challenge to the heroes.

She’s everything a good MLP villain should be.

I’d argue that The Unity Crystals give Twilight a better ending than FiM’s series finale did. And given the premise, you might as well set the show in FiM’s future.

It’s a kid show. We always forget that or that fact usually gets overridden with other things. Like classic good vs evil. Good guys win, bad guys lose. I supposed it gets confusing when either sides start to switch sides.

Starlight’s reasoning being bad is a common thing for people to think, but like no one else has any actual motivation for their actions. I mean what was Luna’s reason again? Oh no, ponies have to take rest during the night, a natural thing to do. Time to bless them with no more Vitamin D.

I’ve always thought Tirek would legitimately be the most likely to accept redemption of the 3.

But he’s not a hot bug lady or a cute golly so he’s never brought up except in the context of the Legion as a whole.

Meh. It’s no different than PL. G5 has cute and memorable characters, and the interactions are fine. The writing is just not there.

Her redemption arc in Season 6 and 7 I liked, but her reasoning for becoming evil was crap. No one is that realistically deranged that losing a friend makes you enslave a town of gullible ponies.

I for one also enjoy Starlight’s turn. My favorite moment will always be “YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?! I’LL SHOW YOU!!”

While I don’t mind the Legion of Doom getting petrified, I personally don’t think Tirek was beyond redemption, but he’d definitely need to have a heart-to-heart with his brother and father.

Tell me, does TYT have soul?

FiM had many issues. Especially late in the series. Starlight’s redemption, the student six, Discord being Grogar, a lot of OOC moments.
But G5 just feels so bland and lacking in soul. It feels corporate. Underdeveloped characters, Sparky, weird plots, one of the worst villains in MLP ever. Being set in the same universe as FiM for no real reason.

I never ignored the issues of G4. I just think it was overall better than G5, which has more issues. :P

Same as how the prequels have many issues, but are still overall better than the sequel trilogy. Which have even more issues.

Yeah, Disney’s Star Wars movies, they’re not good, that horse has been beaten into the ground enough. So why do people have to cut context and lie to make them look worse? The prequels, I appreciate more now, but I still see that they are filled with stupidity. Their stupidity is more funny bad as opposed to the more frustrating bad stupidity of the sequels, but I’m not going to fool myself with nostalgia goggles into thinking their problems are magically gone.

Also, fandom parallels aside, I’m sure people know how much I weary G5 getting compared to the Star Wars sequels. Like…even if I was one of the people who thought the Star Wars sequels were actually good, it would irritate me, since MLP is nothing like Star Wars the same way it’s nothing like Marvel or Lord of the Rings. Even if we’re just talking franchise mishandling comparisons, it’s inappropriate. Star Wars was bought out and driven into the ground by a megacorporation. MLP, on the other hand, has always been a cartoon meant to sell a corporation’s products.

Not many people will realise an accident is well…an accident and not deliberate. I know when someone is deliberate and sometimes they have a bad day. By no fault of yours even, and you just so happen to be their target of venting.

This fandom ignoring every problem of G4 to make G5 look bad is kind of like how people ignore the problems with Star Wars prequels to make the sequels look bad. Granted the sequels are pretty bad but still.

As fast as it happens, Starlight’s turn in Season 5 remains my favorite. The voice acting, the dialogue, the music, the setting, it all just clicks for me. Has the right amount of gravitas

I think so, as long as we’re talking about G4 as it is, and not how the fandom collectively remembers/imagines G4.

In the Season 5 finale, her reformation definitely felt rushed.
