My top 5 vowels, ranked from worst to best.
#5: U.
Before I continue, take a moment and say all the vowels aloud: “A,” “E,” “I,” “O,” and “U.” You notice how each of the first four each have their own distinct pronunciation? How each have their own visible purpose in the human language, essentially the Earth, Air, Water, and Fire of the lexicon?
…and then you get to “U,” which feels like two or three vowels stitched together into some Frankenstein’s monster of a letter. In fact, it takes two more letters for “U” to become “You,” a word that’s completely homophonic with the letter, whereas the vowels “A” and “I” are functional enough to be their own words.
There’s also the fact that it’s the least used of all the vowels, and with a considerable chunk of those usages being silent (build, tongue, laugh, etc.) it can rarely be spoken or written without having several other letters added to complete any word it’s a part of. In fact, just count all the times in the past few sentences how many more times all the other vowels are used than “U” to describe how bad it is.
Screw “U.” “U” can go jump off a cliff.
#4: I.
A considerable step up above “U,” but still a vowel that feels…limited. While it still comes off as its own individual letter, unlike the prior (and it’s still cool that it can be its own word,) it’s hard to come up with a word off the type of my head where “I” has more than two different pronunciations. In fact, ending a verb in “ing” turns the “I’s” pronunciation into that of a crude “E.”
It’s a vowel that deserves more coverage than it actually receives, but it’s merely for that lack of coverage that I rank it somewhat low.
#3: A.
A letter that has no major flaws that hinder its pronunciation, but doesn’t pretend to be any more than it actually is. It’s the most balanced of all the vowels, putting it right in the centermost point of this list.
#2: E.
Obviously, being the most used vowel in the English language, “E” has to be one of the higher-ups. A considerable amount of its pronunciations closely patch that of the letter itself, and even in it silent usages, “E” feels more like the letter itself is in command: unlike “U,” whose silent usages make the word several letters longer, “E’s” presence can drastically change one word from another, such as “Fat” turning into “Fate.”

Much like the shape to the letter itself, “O” is just a letter that, quite literally, comes full circle. It has a wide range of pronunciations, but “O” has an ease that isn’t matched by the other vowels: with all the other vowels, pronouncing them requires the lips to twist around a very specific way, but “O” is so easy to pronounce that you can have your lips in any position you want and still be able to say it accurately.
There’s also the added bonus that “O” is the vowel that precedes “E” in the word “Vowel” itself.
