Slightly more serious, DB is the only pony site and the only thing involving pony I frequent anymore so I don’t much know of things outside of the site. Didn’t know things were that dire.

Derpibooru, for all that can be said, works with artists within reason. Don’t think we should be scaring them away.

Artists do complain. I don’t mod anymore, but I’ve found there are definitely some very persnickety artists who get mad about such things. I don’t know anything for sure but it would not surprise me at all.

If I came here and the first impression was that it had more meme than art, I would leave immediately.
 
It just comes down to personal taste.
 
You are right that you shouldn’t lie the first impression, but you shouldn’t show them the ugly part of the truth either. You don’t tell them “this site has 3 drama thread per day” as a welcome message. They have to stay long enough to be able to accept the flaws.

Well if the vote passes, we’ll test it out and see what happens. The situation now is we do have people complaining about these things near constantly; many of them are artists that teeter on not wanting their work here because it ends up lost in a sea of template images. The booru is already known by many as memebooru, or the various exploitable memes known as “derpibooru memes” outside the site; I don’t want the site to go down in history as “MLB without watermarks”.
 
Rate limits are unfeasible; we’d have to track images uploaded per IP, which punishes people uploading, say comics, or just an artist dump. Or rate limits per tag, which is pointless given how easy it’d be to avoid. Or have 20 more moderators. Nevermind that it’s objectively not possible to differentiate between a “good” exploitable meme and a “bad” one.
 
Clover is working now on something that would be a neater solution to all this, but in the meantime or assuming that fails, doing nothing seems like the worst option.

If I were a new user who just came to a site that was professing to be a major MLP:FiM image archive, and I couldn’t find something as basic to the fandom’s image output as Human Studies 101 or Conspiracy Lyra, I’d probably abandon it and search for somewhere that took being a thorough archive seriously. If someone put up a link to a funny Conspiracy Lyra on Derpibooru, but when I clicked it I was told there was no such image, I’d be pissed at Derpibooru and abandon it.
 
If I were a new user who just came to a site where every page was covered with spoiler tags (that you have to click through twice to see the image), I’d be deeply annoyed. As admins you maybe don’t see what it looks like. But a page full of spoiler tag images is worse than a page full of Chickun. At least Chickun has some variety to it. So trying to spoiler it is worse than leaving it alone, and in most respects worse than even hiding it. But let’s say you do. If I stick it out that far, click through a bunch of them, and find nothing but Chickun after all my clicking through spoiler tags, I abandon the site. If I click through and happen to find a few good ones, but your censors can’t tell the difference between Chickun and Conspiracy Lyra, at that point I’d abandon it in frustration at all the clicking through.
 
Basic kindergarten-level rule of first impressions: make an honest one. This is what we have here; if you register an account this is what you will see (plus porn and gore that we don’t want to show you until we know you’re not an eight-year-old girl). There are tons of good images that we don’t mind an eight-year-old girl landing on. And it’s worth ignoring those five Chickun images on this page to get to that good one of Cloudchaser and Flitter kissing, Lyra laughably misunderstanding human life, or Fluttershy looking adorably moe, as your tastes dictate. Derpibooru already censors the ability of newbies to see the really hardcore stuff, for obvious and understandable reasons. Censoring memes (and making no distinction between the good ones and the spammed shit) is not only a whole different thing, not only annoying, not only a bad precedent. It’s also a bald-faced lie. If you register here and want to see My Parents Are Dead, and Wet Mane, you’ll be right back to wading through Chickun and Screaming Armor. Because this “solution” also doesn’t even address the actual problem, which is not memes, but assholes shit-spamming the front page.

You may simply be expressing your personal opinion on the matter, but your post makes it sound a lot like the decision has already been made and therefore the results of the poll don’t actually matter, rather it’s just a roundabout way of announcing the change while making it seem like the users had some say in it.

I think default spoilers/hiding should be reserved for stuff that can actually potentially gross out or offend people rather than just stuff people find annoying. That said, I’m really fine with whatever decision ends up being made. Either way, I certainly would be fine seeing fewer meme spams though I realize that relies on uploader discretion which I know a lot of people don’t have.

The default spoiled and hidden settings are merely a starting point for new/unregistered users. It’s to put our best foot forward and appeal to as many people as possible so they are willing to stick around and see what more we have to offer. You don’t do this by slapping them in the face with things that have a higher chance of offending, annoying, or irritating them.

Hmm, I could go either way. I’m all for freedom, but maybe what should be done is to somehow encourage memes to be posted on My Little Brony rather than Derpibooru… that’s what it was made for, and it’s been pretty dead lately, likely due to all the memes being posted here instead.
 
Problem is, Derpibooru has a better interface. Everything on MLB has to pass moderator choice, whereas here you get your few minutes on the main page nomatter what, and it’s a lot easier to search later, add tags, etc.

We are trying to sell a package (with a nice bow on it, good quality paper and decorated) for new people. If they find that we shipped them a package full of shit… well, its their problem.

That sounds more reasonable. I still don’t like it; I think the average newbie will be more engaged by Conspiracy Lyra and Human Studies 101 than enraged by Chickun and Screaming Armor. But at least censoring them only for the unregistered doesn’t attempt to afflict the entire user base just to oil a few squeaky wheels.

This is a good question. I am actually not sure on this regard (thanks for adding the “I don’t know” option in the poll), but hiding or no, enforcing a unified tag on this kind of picture is a great idea.

Or maybe just be hidden by default for unregistered people. And when they do register and login the chickun/screaming armor/whateverthefuck would show up, and they would have the chance to block it.
 
Just my 50 cents.

If I was a new viewer and found Depribooru, and then proceeded to enter it only to see a bunch of memes instead of pony art, I think that might put me off from the site/ confuse me.
 
So I think hiding the memes by default would be a good idea. If you wanted them back, you could go to your settings, see that they were on the hidden by default list, and just add them to the list of visible.
 
Seems clean, simple, and fair if you ask me. Noone really loses.

To expand on that a bit, we plan to allow users (unregistered or no) to quickly switch between filter presets (‘default’, ‘no meta’, ‘show everything’, whatnot). Registered users would of course have their own filter list to select, as well.
 
Assuming this vote thing passes, once we have that feature we’d probably remove the tag* from the ‘default’ preset and drop it in the ‘no meta’.
 
But I can’t give an estimate on when that feature will exist. I know Clover is actively working on it, but shit’s complicated.
