Makes sense to me.

I’d like to revise a previous head canon. Its not just Twilight who’s an alcoholic. All of the mane six are, although the only ones who make it obvious are Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash, and neither one would ever admit it. Pinkie Pie is a recovering alcoholic (she, like her entire family had to drink heavily to get through day to day life on the rock farm).
 
For her part Rarity is more of a social drunk but always goes a bit to far. The reason she isn’t more respected in Caneterlot is because she’s accidentally cultivated a reputation of being a complete lush, and Fluttershy drinks because its the only way she can get to sleep at night do to her crippling post traumatic stress disorder.
 
As for their preferred drinks, Twilight goes for bourbon, but would happily drink paint thinner if she ran out, Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash normally drink beer and cider, but also partake of the moonshine from Grany Smith’s still, Rarity drinks cherry mostly and has a flask of brandy stashed in her inspiration room for when she needs some extra “inspiration” and Fluttershy has nothing but box wine in her kitchen.
 
I base this all on literally nothing.

Celestia and Luna are not immortal, they keep using the age spell (as mentioned in Magic Duel) to keep themselves at the same age.

The original queen of the Crystal Empire was a dragon. The crystal ponies were originally pit ponies, until they learned how to grow crystal.
 
She actually took over peacefully, as she would fight off the other dragons and only ate the crystals, instead of eating the miners with them.

I always thought that it was because he usually isn’t growing at all, so he was just making up for lost time. After all, Zecora identified his growth as normal for dragons.

I have a theory that Spike’s greed growth is unique to him because he was part of a batch of dragons Sombra experimented on to make a crystal seeking biological weapon, with Diamond Dogs as a failed prototype. Celestia got Spike’s egg after beating Sombra.

Sombra fought dragons regularly and in fact, still has a line loyal to him.
 
The same one Spike is a part of.

We still don’t know what the duties of the princesses are or what the title is supposed to mean. Celestia is the ruler of the country, but she doesn’t seem to share that responsibility with anyone. Cadance wasn’t ruling anything until the third season. Luna didn’t seem to start her dream patrol until then, and I find it hard to believe that Blueblood actually had a day job.
 
I don’t see Twilight’s job as Celestia’s student/agent going away, but the fact that even she didn’t know what a princess is supposed to do is kinda messed up.
 
Not focused on, but even before her coronation, Twilight was given more responsibility than Cadance. Also, Luna is decidedly a junior partner to Celestia, and is only informed of things as they happen, same as Twilight.

That would explain quite a bit. Considering the whole banish-your-sister-to-the-moon thing, it’s natural she’d be kind of a control freak regarding power after that.

To be fair, I’ve had that headcanon since long before HWE aired. In fact, I don’t take the story in HWE as strict historical canon. I think it was actually part of a plan by Celestia to prevent more race riots like the ones that probably happened in the wake of Luna’s banishment.

I think what we’re all saying is that we want an episode to just stop and explain just what the hell kind of government is being run in Equestria. Forget the kids, I’m a poli-sci nerd! I need this information or I’ll go crazier than I already am.

Before Sombra’s rule. The Crystal Empire was ruled by several Political Dynasties and was a battlefield hotbed for numerous nations, organiztions, and other entities, foreign or domestic, in the past, being Conquered back and forth by expansionist empires who wish to harness the power of the crystals. AKA, an area of Power Struggle much like Belgium, Poland, and Korea. And the fictional Arrackis from Dune.
 
Those who control the Crystals control the world.

I was always under the impression that Cadance was a regional governor. When she steps down, I don’t think that the crystal ponies are going to be happy…
 
For the record, I think that Equestria is actually a group of principalities, with Celestia taking the title of princess from one of them. There is no higher title than prince/princess within the country, as it’s used as the generic term for ruler. Principality, kingdom, and even empire are just the equivalent of states and providences. Canterlot, for example, is technically a kingdom of it’s own, but it’s still a part of greater Equestria.
 
With that in mind, the Crystal Empire is kind of like Texas, politically, where it used to be independent but it is too integrated to really split off again. Well, it might end up like Quebec after Cadance retires…

No, not dead, not quite, not yet. Everyone thought that were killed when Twilight got her cutie mark, but they were actually blasted through time and space, randomly appearing around Twilight. The spell will only be completed at the time of Twilight’s death, forcing them to watch her die.
 
At that point, they will be free to live their own lives once more, but the sight of their daughter only realizing what she did to them as her heart was torn from her chest will haunt them for the rest of their days.

Switching to Twilight would be less of a change? It isn’t like Celestia has a time limit here either, not if she can spend centuries waiting for a prospective candidate.
 
Why not just spend a few decades setting up a ruling council of some sort? She’s got the time, and she could make sure that it’s done according to her specifications.
 
Also you claim that rule by immortal is the exception not the rule, even in Equestria, and I think you’re not quite thinking about the time line properly. 1.000 or more years isn’t a huge chunk of time on a geological scale, but it is almost incomprehensible on a historical scale
 
Important Thing One: Equestrian history books include plenty of references to mortal rulers. Important Thing Two: Nobody knew that Celestia’s rule extended for a thousand years until the start of the series, and it still might not be common knowledge. They know that she’s been around for centuries, but they don’t think that she’s always been the ruler. Having mortal rulers still seems normal to them, through study of their own history as well as other cultures.
 
What if the plan is to introduce a republic to ponies gradually over generations, she just hasn’t found the suitable candidate yet.
 
If they switch to a republic, that means that they don’t need a single candidate. Distribution of power means that she doesn’t have to worry about a single maniac taking the throne.
 
For the record, I think that if and when Celestia decides to step down, she’ll actually set up some sort of ruling council rather than just tossing the job to a single pony. She doesn’t care for the demands and I just can’t buy her willingly sticking someone else with a job that she herself dislikes.
 
Giving Twilight, or more likely, Spike, an option of a permanent government post is one thing, but that’s not the same as making them rule.
 
Not-Really-Related-Headcanon: Celestia had been trying to hatch Spike’s egg in hopes of having a friend that wouldn’t die of old age after a century. She only started using it as test for her school because all of her attempts failed and she hoped a fresh perspective would do the trick. Celestia thought that Twilight would be able to awaken the Elements because she gave her a potential long term friend.
 
A long term friend would, of course, acquire value as an advisor and confidante, and likely end up with considerable political power over the centuries.
