Personally, I like what I’ve heard of it so far. “The Vengeful One” is catchy as hell, though it lacks a solo, and their cover of “The Sound of Silence” is beautiful.

I actually have extremely mixed feelings about the newest Gorillaz song. I think the reasons I’m seeing a lot of people have for hating it are the wrong ones, but there are other reasons to dislike it.

I find it very polarizing. I went into this wanting to like it, but unfortunately, it seems to be going in the same weird direction as their last album, The Fall, which I wasn’t a fan of (and quite frankly don’t even consider to be a coherent album as much as a compilation of stuff Damon wrote on tour). There’s no catchy chorus like we had on Gorillaz, Demon Days, or Plastic Beach. Also, for a new Gorillaz video, there isn’t really much of Gorillaz in it.
The thing is, though, people on YouTube seem to be disliking this for the exact wrong reasons, specifically “It’s political.” Considering that Demon Days and Plastic Beach had really obvious political themes and people liked those albums, with some even called Demon Days a modern masterpiece, that’s hardly a valid criticism.
I just hope this winds up being the worst song on their new album, because they have written and can still write better songs than this. But who knows? Maybe replaying it a few times will make me like it.
