As the stats seem to show that a strong majority of users prefer seeing all the clop and gore content, I believe a simple warning next to the “all image” filter would do the job. Maybe put it last in the list so new users don’t click it by mistake.
Just speaking out for the anons and lurkers who might not enjoy posting or might not even have an account. If it’s not too much trouble, please bring back the dropdown menu for us. Also, good work on this and other features, and overall listening to the community.
The explicit vs safe divide is a tricky one to measure but it’s certainly not the majority browsing for the porn.
There’s no way to please everyone with this sort of system, and you’re going to have to do a click-through operation of some sort to access NSFW filters either way if you’re a new user (or deleting cookies).
This approach seemed to us to be the best balance - it’s still way more convenient than signing up an account, but maintains a fairly safe entry to the site for most users.
We may consider bringing the menu back to users who have gone through and selected a filter that is not the default, but you’re still going to have an extra click-through if you’re deleting cookies.
It’s worth noting that if you flip back and forth frequently between a couple of filters, you can always bookmark the “Use this filter” links.
