Speaking of Diamond Dogs, they appeared in the show ONLY ONCE in season 1.
And they’ve shown to be sensitive to noises and whines, dog ears are sensitive irl.
And they’ve never appeared nor even mentioned since.
Season 9, final episode, only mentioned Diamond Dog race once, yet they did not even appeared in the finale,
maybe because they were never reformed, unlike the buffalos whom are in good terms with ponies, that species get to reappear in the Ending of the End at least.

Diamond Dogs felt like the most underused MLP race/species to me of all, followed by the buffalos.

I think they eat them. Or want to wear them.

The only people that ever treated them as disposable are friends with either Spike or Rarity. One eats them, the other can find them at will.
 
Everyone else treats them as valuable. Even Spike and Rarity treat them as rare and precious.

Because if they didn’t want them, they’d just be dogs.

They probably leased that machine for the day.

Well, we don’t precisely know the price of that machine in bits. For all we know it might cost as much as our regular ventilators. Even if we know that gems worth less there than in our world because of their abundance, their rate is surely higher than 1bit=1gem because of their important decorative utility, and trade value with dragons.
 
As for diamond dogs needs for them, I don’t know, maybe it have something to do with some crystal/gems being magic. They could have some kind of sorcerer who can fill gems with magic for them but I really create this idea out of nothing.

My headcanon is that they originally served dragons so they originally dug for them for dragons, but that behaviour has since become ingrained.

Ah, that’s right, just for sidekicks, the ep that threw all previous money value estimations out the window. I forgot.

Well on that note, what do ponies use them for? They certainly don’t use them for money. Rarity uses them for flitters on school dresses and Sweetie Belle glues them to make paper pictures. Clearly, they see them as little more than colored glass. (They probably use them becaause glass is, after all, difficult to make.)

I’m thinking the latter. They seem primitive so it would make sense.

Just what did they want jewels for? Do they eat them, like dragons? Do they use them as money? Do they just like them because they’re shiny?
